My season in a nut shell

Well...I ran to town after grabbing the boys off the bus and seen a group of 3 bucks headed towards my place. The wind was right for me to go to the shed with no scent prep.

I grab the crossbow and head straight for it. Send the Wife a text so she knows where I’m at and doesn’t just let the dogs run free. A few minutes later I catch movement in the thicket and see a little scrub buck. Thinking game on, the juices get to going! I lost him in the thicket and see another one...then another one. One is a dark racked 9 or 10 point I’d guess around 120-125 5/8” ([emoji23]). I would’ve taken any of them given the chance.

I thought they bedded down and waited as long as I could before all light was gone. Go to exit the shed and all 3 were standing in my side yard! How do they do that!? Somehow made it 80 yards right in front of me and I never seen or heard them...

I don’t really have a peaceful meaning to take away from this today. Humbled...by these sneaker little mother...

So...there I was...wind blowing the rain sideways as I got lost in my own thoughts. Water pooling up in my scope and getting through my pants. About the time I started questioning my judgement, I was talking to myself about what Rick always says “only takes a moment for it all to come together”. That turned into me thinking about the agony of him hunting in the brutal cold days. Then my mind wandered into the misery he must of went through. Guessing he was having Joy kick him in the balls before ever hunt I got to chuckling. So there is was, sitting in a stand thinking about Ricks balls...back to my thoughts of wondering what is wrong me I went. [emoji23]

Rain started getting some sleet and snow mixed in and the wind mellowed out a little bit. Enough that I could start looking around and find some peace in my surroundings. That was short lived as the wind picked up even stronger and the rain really started hammering.

Sitting there watching the water pool up on the end of my scope, I was back to judging myself. Viscous circle I was finding myself in. Yup, ricks balls came back to mind and I was all but laughing out loud.

Phone buzzed and I checked it, it was Michael talking about how perfect it would to be in the stand. I replied with just a pic. And noticed movement coming down the hill.

Two fawns came down and popped out at 60 yards. Working towards me the bigger of the two started looking pretty good... Time check showed it was only 4:30, still plenty of time to wait on a bigger deer. Still...I was close to the truck and wanted to get out of the rain. 3 more steps and the bigger one would be at 20 yards and in my window. I reached up and clicked the safety off.

They held up a few minutes and milled around behind some saplings...no shot. Then all of a sudden they turned inside out and freaked! Tails wagging as they went back into the woods I wondered what just happened. About that time I heard a truck coming. This happened 3 times! (Someone must be road hunting this area pretty hard)

As the wind slowed the rain turned to all snow. Light was fading and I could see a herd of deer about 300 yards away. Then another herd in the same area. Seen between 25 and 30 file out in the same spot. Same spot I seen them enter this second field a few nights before.

Next hunt...I bet two of us will be waiting on those deer in that spot! Stay tuned folks...about to get good.

I think I’m enjoying sharing these hunts with you guys as much as the hunt itself. Maybe I’ll start a thread a little earlier next year[emoji23].

To late to worry about pressure Dave. Time to move in close and go for it. If you hunted #7 this morning then you know where the deer are moving at. Time to move in for the kill.

The pressure is on! You've got a couple days left to get it done or your season will be in a nut sack!

Good luck!
