The Future of Hunting in Ohio

If you could make one change to Ohio deer hunting regualtions ,what would it be?

  • Ban baiting.

I'm with Jesse on the kids but I still see it both ways when I was a kid I hunted for 7 seasons before I shot my first deer and I loved it. My kids along with Jesse's and many others have it way easier but they are out there doing the work with us, setting blinds and cameras looking for sign. But they love it, they have the passion for it just like we do because we involve them and make it fun. If you think hunter recruitment is a problem and you have access to land and have kids or even adults that you don't try to introduce to the outdoors even if it's fishing or just shooting then you shouldn't be complaining about that, not calling anyone out on here but I know a few people that are so stuck on making themselves look like a superstar hunter that they don't even want anyone going with them , but turn right around and complain that they are hunting by themselves or that there is nobody out durning gun week like there use to be.

NH is one of those states where you can hunt on any property that isnt posted. It looks to me like private landowners are having problems with people putting up cameras and stands and leaving them. It's just hunters shooting themselves in the foot again by not respecting the landowners property, so now they have to label tree stands and cams with their name and address.

Correct. But the landowners pushed for these rules. Much like this thread asking for the state to step in and do something. Careful what you ask for is all I'm saying.

How does this solve that problem? If they weren't willing to remove the cams and stands before, why would they now? I feel like I'm missing something.

Because now, in theory anyway, there will be (potential) legal consequences for not following the rules, most likely to include forfeiture of your shit if you don't label it and/or remove it when you are supposed to.

Better than the law changing to require written permission for all private property like Ohio. They're very fortunate to have default permission to hunt private property that isn't posted. That should be protected at all costs. I personally feel like any violation of that law should result in a mandatory three year suspension of hunting privileges. Hold those shitbags accountable before they ruin it for generations to come.

I've often thought the same but rather your ODNR number. I don't care for the idea that just anyone can see your name and address or phone number. There's a lot of crazies out there. Here in MS all stands and cams on public land have to have your name and phone number, they can't be placed until 7 days before season and have to be removed 7 days after. Any wildlife violation on public land includes a 1 year ban from hunting public lands.

I think I posted this before- forgive me for the repeat.

Last season we hunted KS. We were in south central, maybe 25min from the nearest gas station. Cell reception in and out. Found this deer sexy af piece with a brushy finger into an ag field. It has a couple trees. "Yup, this is it" we thought. Got in to that draw (which was walk in public access on private and this particular one was non-check in) and the first good tree had multiple cams, mock scrapes, signs of baiting, etc. Couldn't believe it. Anyway- we get to what would be the biggest tree in the draw, a giant MFing cottonwood if memory serves me correct and some dude had a cell cam up the tree a way, some kind of box in the tree (dont remember if there was a solar panel or what was happening there) but the gold crown was the antennae that was all of 50, if not in the 60s, feet up. I may still have a pic on my phone

Another gem are the PA guys who add wheels to their ladder stands and roll them in....seen that more than once.

Don't hate me for saying it but Ohio spoils residents, non residents and public land hunters. Wont say its the best or problem free (as its not) but most things make good/common sense here.

I don't understand your complaint or what any of it has to do with ohio. I'm reading it as if you just wanted to tug on the ODNR-D. Not many post here are saying this place sucks. Most are saying things could improve. They are also contributing what they think could improve.
