The rain last week really help the gardens. It really spruced things up. Here's a few pics of my garden here at home. I managed to to get all three rototilled before this rain hits tonight. It wasn't ideal but I wanted to get through them before it rained. IMG_20150605_192944.jpgThe strawberries I transplanted into the bed this spring. lots of small berries this year hopefully next year they will get a little bigger with another year on the plants.
IMG_20150607_131014.jpgThe cabbage plants are starting to head out.IMG_20150607_131030.jpg
IMG_20150607_131040.jpgThe potatoes are starting to bloom.
IMG_20150607_131056.jpgBibb lettuce .
IMG_20150607_131111.jpg broccoli is starting to head out.
IMG_20150607_131143.jpgDetroit red beets and cylinder beets and the row to the right is carrots.
IMG_20150607_131159.jpgThese are yard long pickles getting ready to start climbing the trellis.
My tomatoes are starting to bloom and the peanuts have really took off since last week. I will post some picks of the two gardens at my parents when I get time. It has the sweet corn, 36 pepper plants, 24 tomatoes, four rows of potatoes, both red and yellow, onions red and white and zucchini more pickles, watermelon , muskmelon and I'm sure I'm forgetting a few things. Its a lot of work but it saves a lot of money and taste damn good in the winter with venison roast.

Looking good dude!

I stopped by today to see if I should water and brought home a little bounty. Going to pickle them with the two
I got off my plants at my house.

I take shit for using Pintrest, but it is a handy ass app. Found a couple recipes and blended them to my liking. Bought a couple peppers from the local farmers market to make it worth while. I sliced mine long ways so I knew which were which. Used white vinegar, water, pickling salt, sugar, turmeric, mustard seed, couple whole garlic cloves and a few slices of red bell pepper. I'll test them tomorrow to see how I like them.

Starts with vinager and a few packets of dry Italian seasoning. Mix that with a drop or two of olive oil. Its great with onions and peppers cauliflower broccoli pickles its all tasty. The longer it sets the better it gets. I use a solution of 1\3 water 2\3 vinager with the seasoning packets. If you don't like that much vinager cut it to half and half . I've also done 1\3 cup sugar 1\3 cup vinager 1\3 cup water and bring it to a boil to dissolve the sugar and the Italian packets it turns out good too. Thatsthe same recipe I can my beets in minus the Italian seasoning. You really can't go wrong with pickiling as long as you use the vinager for base . If you like some zing throw on some hot peppers.

The next are heirloom tomatoes such as beef steaks and big beefs.IMG_20150607_150239.jpg The next is four rows of kennebec potatoes.IMG_20150607_150229.jpgNext is Texas sweet onion and a row of walla walla onions.IMG_20150607_150219.jpgThe next pic is more bib lettuce and celery.IMG_20150607_150208.jpgIMG_20150607_150203.jpg Amish paste tomatoes round up the back garden. The front garden at my parents holds 9 rows of sweet corn planted at different stages. Each row is 100 feet long.IMG_20150607_150132.jpg The varieties are peaches and cream and bodacious. And last but not least a 1000 foot row of green beans or what's left after 3 inches of rain.IMG_20150607_150117.jpg Needless to say I enjoy drinking a few beers and watching the hard work turn into great winter canned goods and fresh table fare for the summer also.

Yea the rain makes a hell of a difference.
The last couple years I planted mine in large mounds and then cover them once with straw. It works great a lot less digging in the fall . If I see a potato that isn't covered I will put more straw on that spot.

We've had 4" plus this week. Dad said one of the fields I used to work in down below Charleston got 2" the other day in 20 minutes. Been crazy. Great for the berries though!
