What lurks below...

We have a 8 (ish) acre lake. Originally dug in the late 1920's as 10 acres. Nearly drained in the 1960-61 era. In the late 1950-1960's they would send my aunt in her Jeep Willie down the hardware store to pick up a case of dynamite, caps or fuse.

In the 70's as kids, I can remember my brother and I fishing with Gramps every Friday all summer after summer. We caught various Bluegills, perch, the occasional sucker, catfish and bass. Ran turtle lines and frog gigged through out our childhood. He taught us to shoot and the basics of tracking.

This lake has been fished and/or hunted by 5 generations. An unknown amount of Bass were added in the 70's. Nothing much was added aside from a dozen white amour "years" ago. There are only a couple left today but they are over 3 ft. long and big around as my leg.

In 2003, I put in 200 catfish. Less than half a dozen were caught over the years. That year they sold for 0.60 cents a piece.
Today we bought 400 catfish. They sell for 0.80 cents each. Our county SWCD fish sale pick-up day was today.

I needed my lake water in a couple of tubs to transport em back. (15 min drive home)

Carsyn, my oldest grandson helped my release the last 200.

He learned about the barbs the hard way and dropped it. We got em in the water.

Very nice. How about some pics of the lake? I have a small pond on my property that I stocked with largemouth bass, hybrid striped bass, sunfish, catfish, shiners and two different kinds of minnows about 3 years ago. Last year I caught a couple largemouth and saw a few sun fish but haven’t caught a striper....don’t know if they survived or if the locals snuck in and fished them out. I’m going to put more forage fish in there soon. May even have it dig out a little deeper....it’s only about 6-8 feet at its deepest spot.

Very nice pics Jim!
I’m currently in the process of building a pond. So far I’ve cleared a little over two acres of woods and have been keeping myself burning brush - huge piles, each the size of a small house. I’ve got plenty of work yet to do but hope to be digging by July. I doubt very much this pond will be enjoyed by generations of my family, but I certainly plan to enjoy it while I’m here.

I always wanted to put in a couple male and female Steelheads I caught down at the river to see what would happen.

A lot of great memories with gramp's out here. We also have 3 small Islands at the east end of the lake. We cleared one out and would camp out on it and go skinny dippin, lol.

Thanks!

What will you be stocking it with?

With all those years, Silt and leaves have slowly filled in the back 20%.
The Islands Jeff referred to use to be over 4 foot deep on the back side with water. Today its only about a foot deep. Meandering silt deposits continue to slowly fill in. Over 35% total is now 1--4 ish foot deep which leads to the Lilly Pad problem I have. Some cover is good for everything but its ever inching out farther. Cutting will work for a while or a special event for paths but they fill back in. Chemicals work if you on top of it but timing is important and usually takes a couple applications. The muck bottom does not allow granular weed/lily killer to work effectively so you have to mix up a rum and go out on the lake with a boat and spray. The killer is absorbed down to the root. Aggressive weed kill will deplete the oxygen and kill fish so another balance needed there.

I started this in hopes it becomes a resource for others. Ours has just got history so I can help discuss long term life cycles.

Isn’t there a way you can put a sump pump in there to pump out the silt but have a way for the water to drain back in? Don’t know how expensive that would be but those dredges they have on the beach replenishment projects at the shore sure do move a lot of sand.

That's sweet. Any muskrat issues ?
