Investigating Ohio’s coyote population and its relationship with local livestock

Official Research Flyer

The Ohio State University is initiating a multi-year, statewide study of coyote ecology and management, and we need samples from harvested coyotes. If you would like to contribute to our research by providing:

o Whisker
o Tooth
o Tissue samples

Please send us an email at OHcoyote@osu.edu, with your name, contact information, and county. We will provide additional information and instructions for specimen storage and recovery by our team. Thank you for the important role you play as citizen scientists in wildlife research in Ohio.

Not that this is totally related to my thread, but I just received this via email and thought to share it if anyone might be interested. If so, good luck!

Why do they need to do this? Per the ODNR they accounted for predation when they decided to massively reduce the deer population 14 years ago. They had all the factors figured out. #Sarcasm.

Seems like another program where people are going too make some money…. Accept the folks turning in the specimens…. 🤨

I'm sure the Ohio DNR is considering having a special permit to harvest coyotes... Another way they can generate more money from sportsman...

The researcher in this project has been tracking urban coyotes for over 10 years. https://urbancoyoteresearch.com/
Surprisingly he doesn't seem to be anti hunting.

@giles , this may interest you.

Part of the coyote’s ability to survive and even thrive in conditions that have decimated less resilient animal populations comes down to one character trait: paranoia. That extends to an unwillingness–except when chased or when giving birth and nursing young pups–to go into their own underground dens.

“We have video of mothers coming to their own den with their own pups inside, and it takes them forever to go in, to work up the courage to go inside their own den,” said Gehrt. “When you think about it, coyotes have incredible senses of hearing, sight, and smell, even touch. Those senses are of no use when they are underground.”
