Got this email from our local union...figured I’d pass it along as it is not automatic, you must ask for it. It’s an extra $1200 per year in you social security. If you’re not old enough yet, you need to remember this for when you are. Unfortunately, this benefit stopped for veterans who served after December 31, 2001.

Thanks for posting it. The emails a tad misleading though. It is one of the longest running chain email I've ever seen though. It was originally sent in 2009.

If your service occurred for 1968 to 2001 it's automatic and you don't need to do anything special as it's already added to your SS record.

If your servive was from 1957 to 1968 they will add it at the time of applying for SS benefits (it's a question on the application.)

I’m always the last to know anything.....but figured I’d pass this along just Incase anyone else didn’t know about this benefit. I didn’t. Also, when I go to apply for social security, I’m bringing my dd214 just to make sure...I don’t trust the government to (automatically) put it on my record.😂

Trust but verify is my go too when dealing with any agency.
I remembered this coming out around the 09 or maybe longer ago and we made some inquiries and found out it would be automatically added. But like SF stated make sure it is, never assume.
