New to the Area, New to Hunting: Looking to tips

I moved to Cincinnati area for work, and will be here thru most of deer season. This is going to be my first attempt taking a deer ever, and I had planned to hunt back home in the IL / WI area, but the cards didn't pan out that way. I've done extensive map recon on public land around where I will be staying, and think i have picked out some decent spots to at least investigate further. I am not, by any stretch of the imagination, looking to nail a trophy, or a buck even of that matter. It's my first year out, and a decent doe will put some meat in the freezer, and teach me some very serious lessons.

Any advice, tips, or insight would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the area and TOO site.
I'm 20 miles north of Cincy but hunt my own farm.
I'm sure someone will come on and give advise on public land around Cincy.

Im not far from Frank. There is Hueston Woods, but its typical public land around here, over run. There are deer there, but there are people also. Good luck.

welcome to the forum, there are several experienced outdoors men from the "Nasty Natti", just put a beer on a string and you can lure them straight to your door step!

Welcome to the forum!
If you would really like a learning experience, come to the Stroud's hunt/get together that we do in October in Athens -
might be able to get you on a deer there. If nothing else, you could get a lot of questions answered in one spot at one time and learn alot from a bunch of guys all in one place.
I can't find the Stroud's thread - would someone post a link?

Welcome! I'm east of Cincy about 45 minutes. My suggestion on public land would be to go early or late season. I also agree with the Stroud's idea.

What part of Cincy you in?

I'm staying in Mason. I also had the idea to start early season, one or two evenings during the week, and try to avoid weekends....

Ive hunted here before. Its not to over crowded until gun season. Not a lot of places to park but if you don't mind walking you can go in far and be away from other people. From Mason you will want to drive south to sr50 east to Hillsboro, Then take 73 south to 770 to Tranquility. Good luck, Hope this helps.

If you like to wade while fishing. Those streams are great. I used to fish them in the 70's and 80's. Caught some great stream smallies in them. Was a long drive from Summit County, but always worth the trip. I'd sleep in my Blazer overnight in a nearby ancient cemetery.

Welcome to TOO. Sounds like you are open minded and willing to work a little for your first deer while you learn. The Stroud's hunt would be great. There is a wealth of knowledge in the members of this forum. Getting some first hand pointers from them would help shorten your learning curve. I believe there is a Sticky about "Hunting 101" or something with some good solid basics. If it isn't a Sticky, maybe type in "Hunting 101" in the search bar and it should pull up. Good luck this season!

I started learning to hunt public land a few years ago. I'm no master of it, but feel free to pick my brain and I'll answer any questions I can and point you to a few resources I've found along the way.

Thanks for the tip! I'll drive down there this weekend and scout it out some.
