Ok, getting ready too pull the trigger on a Apple Nest Thermostat. Been reading up on em and so far haven’t really read anything negative about them. Looked into our power company (Duke power) offering any rebates but all that leads too is allowing them access too it to throttle back my air conditioning during peak power usage times. Sorry, that ain’t happening, unless there’s a way too lock them out of be able too get access but my gut says don’t even go down that road.

Has anyone installed one yet and had any experience with them? Seems pretty simple wiring it. Download the app for setup and you can control it through your app, use an Alexa type device as well.

Sounds like my call to USAA the other day. “Can we use your cell phone to monitor your driving?” Um, no. No you can not track me.
Yeah I didn’t move out here just to be tracked by another big brother and sign up for them too watch what I do.
Have enough of that BS as it is now...

I've never really .messed with them J. I know there is a close comparison model through most manufacturers. Honeywell, white Rodgers, so forth and so on. As far as I know every one of them to work through the internet has a "agreement " you have to use. From my experience with Honeywell's models is, your agreeing to allow honeywell access to your tstat. But the only way they can access your tstat is through your network. I had some customers after reading the agreement said to install a different model that wasn't internet capable.

I mean how often do you really change the temp on your stat? Some people do and some dont. I personally set it and leave it. So I'd never need to be able to adjust it from my phone anyways.

Either way it's up to you, hope this helps.

How you and the wife settling in?

All is well buddy, just setting the house up too our likings. We’ve been doing a lot of traveling since we’ve been down here and like the flexibility of turning it down when we leave and back up when we get close to home....

Glad you and the wife are settling in well. I know that is nice to be able to have those features. I have programmable also, but just dont use the program. That's the only way I could go wireless with the stats and not have to worry about pulling wires for multiple stats.

Well then don’t install this product lol. Or any of the smart doorbells or any other smart WiFi nonsense that’s just another way for big tech to invade literally every area of your life. It’s bad enough we’re addicted to these damn smart phones. Hell, they probably know every time we wipe our ass and our preferred brand of TP. That being said, I have no insight into that particular thermostat 😂. Hope you’re doing well down there buddy!

My daughter and sister-in-law both have it and love it. They travel a lot and like the ability to remotely change the temp. I don't have one, not that I don't trust the technology but I'm just too stupid to use it.

The IoT is a hairy line that I struggle with. Great capabilities and benefits out there, but the cost to personal privacy is more than I care to give up.

The Nest in particular is pretty cool for the reasons stated above, but if you don't change the temp much or travel much, then what's the gain? Alexa on the other hand.....she can stay out of the house!

Big nope from me on the smart home products. Main red flag is that they will give you half of the stuff for free. The curtains are just now coming open a little and we are starting to see where all this smart home data is going and being sold to. My guess is within 10 years folks will have wished they never had them. Especially once these big tech companies get into the insurance game and you have already given them your entire life story, all your bad habits, all your purchases literally they know everything about you and can set your rates accordingly. We are already seeing these products get hacked, burglars already use social media to target residences that post pictures containing high value items in the home. They'd love to be able to have a live feed to see what you have and if you're there or not. Nest may not come equipped with a camera but if you're using it remotely, you're obviously not home.

And in a true energy crisis, do you really want the power company decided who gets what? You are all paying customers and paying for what you use. I think I’d rather wait while my house cooled down or warmed up.

I'll pass on all of the "smart home" tech as well. big bother already knows more about me than I'd like. how fucking lazy are we that we need everything voice or remotely activated? and also, I'm too stupid to use most of it anyway. "Alexa, bring in some firewood..."
hells bells, it bothers me that the only way I can operate my immersion circulator is with my phone. I'd rather plug it in and push buttons or something. I've thought for a long time that all of this convenience technology is making us dumber by the minute. enslaving us incrementally.

Hell, cars, phones, cameras on every other corner. Ring doorbell security cameras, atm cameras and the list goes on. Not even safe in the woods anymore with all the trail cameras. This ones one of the more harmless technologies. The only way the power company would know you had it is you tell them and you sign up for the rebates. I’ll pass on the rebates and stick with a little more technology 😂
