Moose Hunt

I’ll be following along also. I was looking at a moose hunt in northern British Columbia in combination with a mountain caribou hunt but they are very expensive...around $25,000. The moose in Newfoundland aren’t as big but they do have the occasional 50” bull and it’s a fraction of the cost. I’d like to get a decent one for the cabin...plus I’ve heard the meat is the best you can get. I’ve had elk meat before but never moose...and elk meat is great!

on my first trip in 2003, I passed on a 30 yard shot at a 50" bull walking in fading light. wind blowing 30-40 mph. killed a cow the next day. yes, brought all the meat home. US customs gave us a bunch of shit and ransacked my truck on the way home, too. fucking pricks had no reason to do it. we had all the correct paperwork, and no guns. just bows and arrahs, clothes, and meat from two moose. on my second trip a member of our group killed a 50" moose with a recurve bow. there are trophy moose there, but like everything else, there isn't one living in every bog.

even a little moose is gigantic compared to what we're used to around these parts. ;) pretty humbling to be crouching behind a 4" tall spruce tree with nothing but two wooden sticks and string 30 feet from an adult moose. they are a most imposing figure when you're on their turf and there aren't any trees to climb. if killing a moose is all you want to do, it should be pretty good odds with a rifle. I've only hunted them with a bow and arrow. they grow some giant bears on NF, too. saw some giant woodland caribou. one that my guide said was for sure a booner. all of the hunts there are one on one guided hunts if you are a non-resident.

Hunted in Newfoundland in the mid 90's, don't remember the outfitter. Great trip, 3 bulls and 1 cow for 4 hunters. You may want to check with your outfitter about getting a bear tag, there's a lot of them up there. We saw plenty of sign but never did see one but didn't but a lot of effort in it other than sitting over the gut piles 1 evening. Enjoy your trip.

Update: Outfitter called to let me know he had 2 cancellations for the following week of 10/25-10/31 offered it to us if we want it. That week we will be the only 2 hunters in camp. The week before, which we are currently booked for, there are 5 hunters in camp including us. If we hunt the next week we would have the entire area to ourselves. I'm thinking that may increase our odds. What do you guys think?

Hell I'd be so jacked up about going in the first place, it wouldn't matter to me. But if it's just the two of you, I'd like to think you would have the guides undivided attention. Good luck and I can't wait to hear about the adventure.

Looks like I’ll be chasing moose this fall too. A buddy met an outfitter at a local sports show last week and asked if I wanted to go. We’ll be hunting very western Ontario the last few days of September through the first week of October. Just the two of us, no guide, archery, fly in on a remote lake with a cabin. We’ll have a bull tag and a cow tag. Can’t wait!

I’ve been told to look at the pack out as just part of the adventure! That said I hope if we get one it dies right on the bank of the lake....
I’ve helped get one out of a lake and a river. It’ll make you rethink things. Most important tip I can give is to shoot until it drops.
