My Best Shooting Tip for Hunters | Bowhunting Whitetails w/ Bill Winke - YouTube

I struggle with target panic, typically when practicing. But, for some reason, I don't have the problem when shooting at a deer? With my health issues over the past couple years, I have been using my crossbow instead of my Matthews. Not sure what I will be using this year, (depends on my shoulder LOL). Anyway, I thought this was a pretty good video and may help someone.

At the 2:15 mark Bill talks about Pete Shepley and him talking about an acquaintance of Pete’s during the ATA show who gave Pete this mental game to use during the shot process to help eliminate the Target panic and or buck fever hunters using a trigger release often have. Although I have no proof but I’d almost bet the house that Pete’s friend was Dan Zumbro a friend and mentor to hundreds of archers and bow hunters in Morgan county Ohio through the past 4 decades. Gary Coleman(Coal Miner) was another that helped me and many others with both the mental and physical aspects of archery. Sadly, we lost them both over the past few years but their legacies and teachings are still are being passed down to future generations. The reason I’ve come to this conclusion is I remember Dan telling us back in the mid 80’s during teachings at the Malta townhouse upstairs where our archery club shot during the winter in preparation for the Ohio Archers Association shoots of him meeting Pete Shepley and shooting against him during one occasion. I believe they both became friends ever since and this is why I’m pretty certain Bill was probably referring to Dan. Dan was a master of the mental aspect of archery and the innovator if I’m not mistaken of the split limb technology. He was the designer of the TSS Quadrodyne(sp?) bow. Just thought I’d share this with y’all. Glad I crossed paths with those two SE Ohio archery Legends.👍🏻👍🏻

Joel Turner offers an online course to overcome target panic. I've talked to the man that owns Big Bucks Archery, in St. Henry, Ohio, that has taken the course and he swears that it's worth every penny. He said it's $200, but he would've paid 2x that amount, for what he learned and how much better his shooting is today. He has plans to go to Alaska to hunt blacktail deer, in October....with his recurve. (y) 💯
Joel Turner offers some great advice, in this video:

I never really understood what you vertical bow hunters were talking about with "target panic". Never cared enough to look into it either as I just assumed it was something bow hunters had to deal with. It is the only time you really hear the term used. It is something I have really tried to drive home to my kids because I freak out at every shot. I have to fight the "rushing" of the shot. Even on a damn squirrel I want to rush the process.

I certainly struggled with target panic wayyy more back in the ole stick bow days. Still get a touch of it occasionally with the compound. Hate it no matter the implement lol
