No such thing as southern grits either, but here we are. Us “northern” folk like to save some of the sugar from our tea and put it other places. You “southern” folk just like to add so much to your tea that your body just can’t take anymore. 😂

Originating with the Muskoge tribe of southern Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama and the panhandle of Fl. Officially South Carolinas state food. Doesn't get much more southern than that. 😆. You're describing "northern style" grits. 😅😅.

Hmmm, I thought it started in Spain or some other country. Kinda like the rest of today’s America. 😂

I did not grow up eating grits. I will not grow old eating them either. That is about the nastiest thing I’ve seen in a bowl. Wallpaper paste. You people are discussing the merits of wallpaper paste...

Gotta doctor em up. Thats what the butter for. Remove some of the stiction and make it smoother. Wanna talk about pastey nasty then that's oatmeal. Chunky maple flavored snot in a bowl...
For grits mix in butter, salt, pepper, scrambled eggs and crumbled sausage.

making good grits is like making good risotto, good soup stock or good barbeque. takes time, understanding, and pride. I never ate good grits until I started going to SC to hunt pigs and fish. never ate a good biscuit before then, either.

This! I try explaining it to people all the time. so many traditional southern dishes require you to put some soul into it. There aren't any shortcuts. And while all the ingredients may be there, they are just part of what makes the dish. Everyone can buy the supplies to paint a Rembrandt, but few can actually get close.

Come back when you've choked down a bowl of boiled okra. Not much nastier than that stuff.

They are depression era food. I’ll stick with bread and potatoes.

Most southern traditional foods are actually more African decent and civil war era. As the north randacked the South especially during Shermans march to the sea they raided farms and food coffers to feed the union army. Things like blackeyed peas, collard greens, okra, and others were left and viewed as animal feed as the union soldiers had never seen them, much less ate them. Because of its African influence they were more southern. As such that's all that was left for southernors to survive on in many places. That's why southerners eat black-eyed peas and collard greens on new years day for "luck" because they were lucky to have them.

Funny story. A few years back as a little southern fuck you i sat on the steps of Shermans boyhood home in Lancaster Ohio and ate black eyed peas and collard greens. 😂
