Building a "wall"

So, I'm done with the neighbors. Lol. I know we've all been there once or twice. Let me first say, they are respectful (or at least, appear to be) about property lines. They always call when they shoot deer from their box blind....that's 20' away from the property line [emoji58]. The issue tends to be, they shoot plenty of deer, just seems they never shoot them well enough to kill them. They have called to ask permission to blood trail into my woods half a dozen times this season alone. Never finding what they shot. I've been out too, always blood, never deer. So, I'm building a 5' wall made of deadfall, sticks and branches along their border to divert deer. It may not stop deer from coming into their property but its going to force them north or south which would be 70-80 yards away from the blind. Also, hoping if they do shoot a deer, the deer would run back into their ground, and not mine (pipe dreams). Anyways, stick around and see what kind of entertainment I'll present to you my friends!

The secondary positive is that it clears the woods of deadfall for my next spring project....burning! [emoji1787][emoji1787]

Interesting thought. But if the deer aren’t dying, why wouldn’t they just run the 80 yards and go around? I’d put all that work and effort into a giant bedding area. Hinge cut and deadfall that no one wants to walk into. Create paths that favor your set up. Make them injuried deer feel comfortable enough to stop and lay down. This gives you the option to join them and give the proper amount of time needed for the deer to bed down and die.

Just spit balling off the top of my head here.

I went to a QDMA outing a few years back and was shown a hinge cut wall doing exactly what you are hoping to do, divert deer and make it a mess for the neighbors if they wanted to trespass. It was mostly because of the trespassing and blinds on the fence line. Was unbelievably thick and a tangled mess, about 20-30 yards wide up to the fence line. You couldn't even see the fence or the blinds for that matter from the inside where we were being shown. If they noticed a trail forming anywhere through it they would immediately plug it with another hinge or something else.

They could just go around, my issue is more of a diversion from the deer even getting onto their property at that section, then them shooting them. They bait pretty heavily with apples most of the year, I won't be able to stop them from attracting them. Bedding is kind of a moot point. There is 20 acres of CRP just south of them, east of me and trying to get them to bed in my block of woods, other than at night, isn't going to happen. I guess it's more of a "fence row" than anything. Just making sure they get the picture. I mean, I could be a complete d-bag and just tell them no Everytime they ask to blood trail, but that would just end up with more issues. [emoji2369]

The beginning of the base. Lots of work to do to thicken it up. But lots of deadfall and such to do it in the woods. We also learned that even though we just started doing it yesterday, we kicked two rabbits out of there today. Always a plus to add bunny habitat!

Soooooo.... what are you going to do when they decide to just move their box blind over to your opening in the “wall?”

Playing devils advocate here: This doesn’t sound like a good idea. A ton of work that likely will not remedy your problem. In fact, it may create additional problems when your neighbor gets offended by your wall building idea.

How about this idea instead: Order some Deer Stopper. It’s a liquid repellant that is usually used to protect food plots and crops. One application lasts over 30 days. Spray an “invisible wall” along the boundary and see how that works. You can redirect the deer and see if it helps, all while your neighbor hasn’t noticed a thing, and therefore has no reason to get pissed off.

Well, they can't move the blind, it's a fully built and concreted into the ground. I mean they can, but, it would be an awful big headache.

They also can't move to the new "hole" because it's not on their property. And the people hunting aren't even the property owners, just guys they let hunt there. So, I'm not even slightly concerned about offending them. I already hinge cut walled the other side. I'm not worried about the movement there. The new "deer hole" is in the middle of the property over and coming from a CRP bedding area.

And yes, ive thought about spraying deer repellent, but I also don't want the deer to completely avoid that area, just more of a steering maneuver.

I def. Understand your concerns there though. I guess we'll see what happens.

Seems emotional and ineffective but hey, your property and time not mine. I’ve found it more effective to work with your neighbors rather than against them. Obviously there is history here but I’d focus on having an inside out property and keeping as much daylight deer movement on your property as possible. Especially if one side is devoid of some IQ points.

I agree. I'd much rather work with them but, as much as I try to help, it's more effective talking to a brick wall. And unfortunately, as much as id love to make an the interior of the property more appealing and effective, it's literally impossible seeing as it's a functional Christmas tree farm. Lol. Guess, we'll have to see what happens.
