that is a lonely Chanterelle. :( they're just getting started. middle of July to Middle of August is always when I find the most.

my Chanterelle hunting has only produced a few skillets full until today. they have been really slow this season. this isn't the mother load by any means, but these are the most, biggest and nicest I've found so far. probably hit another spot tomorrow. it's prime time right now. these rains and cooler temps ought to get them fired up in a hurry.

pretty productive day of shroomin'. I missed the mother load at this particular honey hole. lots of Chanterelles about 3-4 days past their prime, getting a little dry. I still cut 5 or 6 lbs, but surely left behind twice that. I did happen upon a beautiful flush of young Oyster mushrooms after I gave up on the golden fungus. I'll probably can all of these Chanterelles, eat up the Oysters as fast as I can. Nancy on a plane for Washington state today for a week. have to eat them all by myself. bummer. ;)

this was after I cut all I figured I could possibly eat in the next 3 or 4 days. woulda cut them all if I had any friends. these are choice Oysters mushrooms

these are two gallon buckets. perfect for collecting Chanterelles. only thing better would be a similar size wicker/woven basket. of if would get off my ass and drill a hundred 1/4" holes in the bottom and sides of these.

they grow super fast when conditions are good. don't leave them for more than a day or two at a time if you are keeping tabs on them. my magic mushroom tree that has been covered with them for the last two years didn't produce very much this year, and the one dinners worth I got were fading fast three weeks ago. same tree didn't have any until October last year, but they were on the second week of August two years ago. has been a lousy year for summer mushrooms. I'm hoping to find some more COW's before it's over. gonna look for some Lobster mushrooms for the next month, too. I don't spend too much time looking at the ground past the middle of October.

I’ll be interested to see what you think of it. I’ve never eaten one, but have heard they are great. Then again I heard the same thing about puffball... and that stuff is not for me!

I've eaten them the last several years. Nothing to get to excited for like a perch or your favorite beer on a hot day. Seems like any shroom is good with enough butter and salt. Pizza oven I built my folks is getting fired up for later.

COW is a tasty mushroom. it's not close to a Chanterelle, imo, but very good if they are fresh, which is important. in my mind, there is more to consider than just taste when eating wild edibles, mushrooms especially. some stand alone well, some need to be used as an ingredient to a larger dish, but pretty much all of them are very nutritious COW's have a large dose of trace minerals and metals that most of us are probably deficient in, and they have remarkable anti-inflammatory properties as well. I've eaten enough of them for the last two years to notice that I feel better when I'm eating them regularly.

Interesting. I did not know that about them. Maybe I'll start eating more of them. I'm the guy that walks past it.
