I’d also use ONLY pellets that your smoker recommends.
I learned a big lesson with this. I have a Traeger and they recommend only using Traeger pellets. I shop Menards more regularly than places that sell the Traeger pellets so I bought Pit Boss brand of pellets that look pretty much the same. WRONG!🤦🏻‍♂️
They must be formulated different cuz I even stored them in dry conditions and they burned totally different and had my temps everywhere. I vacuumed it all out a few days after I last used it and went with Traeger pellets and it’s running like it should be and maintaining set temperature like it should be. I just wished the hopper design was better so I didn’t have to check on it so often to make sure the pellets aren’t piled up on the sides of auger pit and it’s constantly feeding them.
I don't have a dog in the race but what if you buy a pellet smoker that doesn't have a brand of pellets like a yoder or rectec?

I would agree that the formulation may be different but you're the first to state that you can only run your brand of pellets.

Could be on me but the pit boss pellets I used were stored in a dry place before using. 🤷🏻‍♂️
It’s clearly stated in Traegers manual to only use Traeger pellets so that’s what I thought the issue was. Maybe it was the excessive dust before I started sifting? Not sure? Just passing along my issue I had with going away from recommendation in manual. You do raise a valid points Doug and Dave maybe it was moisture in pellets even though how it was stored. 👍🏻
I did and still do vacuum out the pot and smokers base before startup and THAT is very important also.👍🏻

I’d be interested to hear what other pellet smoker brands suggest in their manuals as to the kinds of pellets they recommend.👍🏻

I’ve only ever used traeger so I can’t comment on other brands. I did season mine with some pit boss that I had from someone leaving it behind. No issue with seasoning it.

Put some ribs on a while ago and the wife said she was craving some salsa. I told her to throw the veggies on the pellet grill with the ribs. Pretty dang good! Hers is on the right...has onions and that nasty soap plant in it.

I'm about to happen into a Traeger 1300, while it won't replace the propane Weber grill, I'm chomping at the bit to try some of the recipes in this thread!
You’ll love the traeger! We’ve had ours over a year now with no issues at all. The WiFi version is the way too go, don’t have to be around or checking on it all the time.
I don’t think you’ll be disappointed at all with it. Plus the traeger app has some awesome recipes as well.
