The thought of whistling wings is now WAY more appealing to me than a buck grunt...
Ha! I knew this day would come!!!

Welcome to my world, Jesse. I really like hunting deer, but I love bird hunting. I'll chase a deer here and there early on if I find a good one worth chasing, but if not I don't really take it seriously until November or sometimes even later.

There's really no comparison between the two types of hunting from an enjoyment standpoint. When I'm in the blind cooking bacon and eggs with my buddies and a good dog while birds work our blind, it takes that once in a lifetime deer hunting moment to compete. And we get those moments duck hunting much more often. Once we get a boat, it's very likely my deer hunting will go to a few days a year. Living on the river and having access to WV, I can hunt ducks from October 1 to late January and only miss about 20 some days.

I learned something this weekend...it's about impossible to track a deer in the tall grasses in the early season. Never had a problem before, but always had a hole on both sides of a deer. Much easier to track once it has died off and isn't 8' tall. I probably won't go out again until those conditions change.

I was going to come home for 30 days in October but the Air Force had other plans. I am going to elk hunt in for 15 days in Nov and Dec. I am seriously thinking about coming home in January. However I might start looking for a house again so we will see.

I guess I'm not the only one...between fall baseball and softball we are not even close. Sadly I haven't even washed our clothes. Drew has knocked the snot out of squirrels but we haven't pounded it like normal. We will get after them shortly...

Isn't it funny how life changes . Ya never get less busy . I'm still trying to get out when I can . But after yrs of no success on big deer till late Oct I don't force myself to hunt now like I do later . Another thing ive learned is I don't HAVE to kill a big deer . I'm fine not killing a buck . Obviously if I do great . But I've killed enough I feel fortunate already ...every one from now in is a bonus.

Ditto....we are on the same page Jake!

I enjoy hunting early season with my daughter but don't get serious myself until November hits. I try to conserve my time until then with having two kids. I have taken this approach for about the last four or more years and don't plan to change it any time soon.

Like many, I went through a phase where I hunted hard right from the start. That was a long, long time ago. The last couple of years we have hit it pretty hard, but there was a good reason. We've had pretty darn good luck the last two opening weekends, but that was only because we started baiting deer with apples. It's not really hunting, but it was fun. These days, I go more than I would if it weren't for my eager hunting buddy, Mason. He is going through the "gotta go" thing, and I tag along. I don't even take a bow most days. It's all good, I like being in the woods, but I'm not actually trying to find a deer for me to shoot... I just don't care about that anymore. I go when I feel like it.
