Ultra-lite Spinning Combo

I am looking to get a decent ultra-lite spinning combo for smallmouth fishing in small streams. I have a Wally world special that is getting wore out. I want to get a better quality one that I am going to put some 2 or 4lb line on.

You close to a cabela’s

Yes we are close to Cabelas. Actually we drive right past there when going to camp. I definitely don't want to big of rod as the streams aren't that big. Also this rod will likely just stay at camp so shorter is better as it is less likely to get broke.

I’m a fan of one piece spinning rods also, and with a 5’ your more apt to be one piece as well...
cabela’s in Columbus shows a sale for rods going on right now.

I’ve had good luck with Mitchell reels for pretty cheap. They hav served me well for fresh and salt water light duty. I’m a fan of shimanos as well. I’m sure they have something that can be paired with a rod for less than $100.

To each their own, but I think a 5' rod is asking for frustration with stream smallmouth. We occasionally run into some pretty nice fish in our streams and I don't think I could get a very firm hook set on them with a stubby ultralight.

That may be true, but I have tried longer poles there and especially with the kayaks it can be frustrating a little. Also on this stream where we are fishing a 14" smallmouth is rare. Most are in the 6-10" range. An ultra-lite makes it fun to catch those little buggers.

I used the hell outta a micro spinning outfit for quite a few years pond fishing when the kids were small. Coughs everything from 3” blue gills to 4lb large mouths on it. 4 lb test is all you need with a light drag...

I’ll throw another vote in for shimano, my favorite rod is a shimano ultra light in fast action. I’ll look at the model next time I think about it. It isn’t a stubby, and works just fine in these little creeks. You can actually set the hook being fast action and fight a carp if needed. It’s paired with a Cabela pro spinning reel from the bargain cave. I don’t like the reel though, it’s way to fast.

My kids use those cheap Shakespeare combos in that 5’ range. Pretty damn annoying if you ask me. Can’t feel the difference in anything and you have better luck watching the rod tip. The up side is you can buy 5 of those for the cost of one good one. I think I spent more on my braided line then the last combo I bought. No joke
