The biggest reason I sold my home in ohio last year was because of the Amish. When I bought the property, 18 acres of prime so. highland county. The place was just awesome. a couple years later the amish started buying property around me. It wasn't a big deal at first but after a few years the deer numbers went down so much that you were lucky to see a deer. I also had 150 acres down the road to hunt. So that realy helped. I did catch the amish on my property a few times and told them where the property line was. And that I was going to call the land owner(retired dnr) that allowed them on his property. I did call him and he said he would talk to them. A few years later the amish have bought up every piece of property around. I felt it was time to get out of the area. And did. I still have the lease down the road. witch is farther away from the amish. 40 acres of it that is closer to the amish went from being a whitetail mecca has dwindled to lucky to see a deer at all. There is an 80 acre piece of property between us and a city of amish. The guys that hunt the 80 have kicked the amish off there land many times but they keep coming back cause they know them guys are rarely there. The 2nd day of gun this year I had a doe and 2 fawns coming toward me across a field on our property. I was looking at them when all the sudden shots started ringing out. The asshole was on the other side of the field shooting right at me. Missed every shot he made. I yelled to him and he started running. No way I could catch him. The land owner said to call the dnr but I told him How do you describe an amish guy to the dnr, They all look the same. I realy have nothing against them but when it comes to hunting or trespassing there fugging assholes imo. Like others have said, they think they can get away with it. The turkey population has went to shit over there to. Amish=poachers

My dealings with these guys have also been from Highland county… I have NOT had good luck with our local GW.

I personally have dealt with and worked around Amish a good part of my life. Like many have said there is good and bad. The best contractor we work with is Amish and is the cleanest and most professional contractor I know. He has to be to do the kind of jobs that they do. On the other side of the coin I have worked around ones you almost had to have a nose plug on to stand it.

Anyways this story classifies for this thread because it has to do with "Sammy". Sammy is a short but stock Amish man. He works for said contractor above. The house they where building was going to have a two story deck built on the back of it. We where there putting in all the duct work and the furnace and A/C. So this nice summer morning they start to auger the holes for the large 8x8 post that are going to go up two stories high and support both decks. This two man gas powered auger proceeded to get wedged into a sand stone. They worked all morning to try and get this auger unstuck, but all labors where to no avail. Well lunchtime rolled around and we where all outside eating our lunch. Sammy gets this bright idea that he might try to ride the auger. Well after some taunting and very unscientific talk about whether or not it could be done is how the rest of lunch went. Sammy came to the conclusion that this was something he could do. So he proceeds to climb on top of this auger and sit Indian style. He grabs the pull string and fires the thing up. He grabs the handle, and what I witnessed next I will never forget for the rest of my days. Cause chances are I will never see anything like it again. That auger took off like toy top spinning on steroids and Viagra at the same time. Sammy didn't last but two spins at the most before he was sent like a clay pigeon being thrown from a thrower, spread eagle perfectly parallel about 6' off the ground. Sammys' flight only last but a mere second, but he did cover about 20' of glide distance before crash landing back on earth. Which at what point he became a rag doll mixed with a tumble weed sort of thing for a little while.

I honestly don't think I have ever laughed so hard in my life. Fortunate enough Sammy didn't get hurt in the stunt, and I don't even remember how they got the auger unstuck.

This thread is full of LOL. I've never heard anything good about the Ohio Amish.

We have a flea market out here with an very large Amish store in it. The food is alright, but the bakery stuff is absolutely amazing. I've never smelled any of them but they aren't very talkative people...

Very funny story Steve!

I remember as a carry out and stock boy at the IGA in Beverly Ohio that whenever they came in the smell was so bad the odor hung around 15-30 minutes after they had left! They were as friendly as could be but DANG!!! I had to talk and breathe out of my mouth till it dissipated which usually left me with cottonmouth.

I personally have had no run ins with them but I didn't hunt near them neither but know they work hard and build quality products.

The only other group or sector that I've noticed with such offensive BO are those from India or that area! I don't mean to sound mean or judgmental but DANG!!! It's just an observation!!!

The smell thing reminds me of the one Seinfeld episode where the valet parker stunk up Jerry's car...lol

Oh, if I remember correctly the valet parker was from India TOO!

Ever been to South Korea? I'd pack a team of Amish in my truck with me way before I let them Kimchi jars in my truck. You can tell a Koreans house from a block away.

I also take back the comment I made about ALL AMISH STINK. I do know one guy who doesn't, and I've never met a female Amish that made me want to puke. It's usually the guys. Also, just because they smell like jungle ball sack, doesn't mean they aren't good peoples. I just prefer to talk to them outside and from upwind. They all do work for what they get also. I've never met one that thought a job couldn't be done or it was to hard. They are dedicated and not scared of work.

Here is a link to a video of a house Shrock has done. We did all the plumbing and HVAC in this house, and the garage she refers to toward the end of the video was a 3/4 Mil. 4 car garage with a full basement under it and a fully furnished man cave in the loft.

Just like any other group, there are good and bad. Not all Amish are great craftsmen. I have seen some shysters out there who couldn't build a square dog house. Some of them are great people with wonderful craftsmanship. Others overcharge for their stuff because it was "Amish built."

Fortunately, I have not had any hunt close to me. I run into them at shows where we are selling tree stands. Other vendors have warned me about them. You have to watch them like a hawk. They come in packs. One distracts you while the others loot you. I have been fortunate, but I have had a few I was keeping a close eye on. They were not there to buy. I have found them to be cheap. They beat on your prices hardcore. I have had a few who I could tell were just plain good people. Very happy to have done business with them. They might ask for your best price, but don't beat on you for half an hour. Those were the good ones. Just like anyone else I suppose. There are plenty of hillbilly rednecks drunk out of their minds beating on you over price too. At the shows, many are not the sweetest smelling creatures. Good thing the shows are outside.

I don't care if they are black or white, Amish or Catholic, male or female. I try to make my opinion based on the person. Unless they are middle eastern decent. They can all go back to their shanty in the desert and hump a camel or goat. They stink. They rip Americans off in their hotels and gas stations. They hate Americans. They are the worst to negotiate with. If I get a call from a motel or gas station to plow their snow the answer is always the same "We are all booked up." Have not dealt with a single one yet who hasn't shorted me on money or tried to renegotiate after you have done the work. I am not in business to work for free. God Bless the USA. Fugg those pukes. They are here for one reason: To filter tax free money back to their homeland. I don't like that.

I'm not Amish, none of my family is Amish, have only even talked with a few Amish in my entire life, but you guys really surprise me with your bigoted attitudes. So many of you are passionate about individual rights, guns, speech, American liberties and then you downgrade those that don't adopt YOUR philosophy. What a contradiction that is.

I can guarantee you that they work for a living and aren't lining up to take assistance provided from my tax dollars, which I'm guessing some of you have.

I can also guarantee that the majority of all trespass violations in the great state of Ohio are NOT Amish related. In my area it is all of the good ole local country boys.

Sad but expected.

So now all of you jump in and tell me how wrong I am and explain how YOU justify your bigotry because you just know more than me.

Best post on this thread.

Any group has good or bad. Why not start a thread entitled "Stories about dealing with 20-something year old non-Amish men" because I've had WAY more stories about encounters with them on my property than Amish. Where I live we are surrounded by Amish. Some trespass. Some don't. Some work on our farm. Some we wouldn't hire ever. The ones that work on our farm have been the most productive workers we have ever employed. On thing I can say though is if you catch an Amish man trespassing and have him prosecuted the word gets around their community and then you just have to deal with the 20-something year old local non-Amish men that think they can hunt anywhere they want.
