Ohio sucks

I could be called crazy here but in my neck of the woods every Billy Big Time is the next big professional hunter and I believe that is also what is hurting deer numbers, why? Because they feel they need to shoot every doe that they come across, shooting "big" bucks but they end up being 1-2 yr old deer, snatching up land and closing for themselves, wounding too many deer, and just overall crappy hunting ethics! They see all these hunting shows and I can't stand talking to them, " I got 5 mature bucks, 2 shooters, and 3 Monsters, and 20 mature does running my woods." Really ? on a property that is 20 acres maybe and not a woods with in 1 or 2 miles ??? I just walk away from guys when I feel like I am watching a real life hunting show......It's the hunter of the future, all about themselves rather than the sport.

I don't remember anyone saying that hunting should be easy. It never has been, at least in my world. I also don't remember anyone ever saying hunting in Ohio sucked, until about 8 years ago... now it seems to be a common conversation among many, not just on social media. Our local farm vet just left the shop. Old boy has lived around here for 40+ years... he thinks deer hunting sucks in these parts now, and I have never seen him influenced by what he's read on any internet forum.

It ain't what it was, but it is what it is.

If it's that hard, tell me how a camp of out-of-staters can pile up 6 deer in just over a week, all from public land? That's what I saw this November in Morgan county... And I've seen it time and time again over the past ten years. Guys that know nothing of the area can still show up and put deer in the backs of their trucks.

Let's be real here... Deer aren't hiding behind every tree, but it's not like we're hunting sasquatch either. That's the impression I get from a lot of people. They actually have to work a bit to kill a deer, so it just sucks. It has to suck. It's not supposed to be hard. At least, that's the mentality that was created when a lot of the so-called vocal younger generation hunters were cutting their teeth in the deer woods. Just because people got used to seeing a lot of deer during the hay day doesn't mean that's necessarily how things "should be."

So you're saying that because we still have bicycles we shouldn't complain if the automobile is regulated nearly out of existence? Who said getting groceries was supposed to be easy, you can still pedal your bicycle. I mean look at that guy over there riding his bike to the store, see you can still get there, you just have to work harder. Nobody ever said we invented the automobile to make things easier. We need to manage the transportation methods fairly to include for bicycle companies..

Yeah JB.. Totally logical argument you make there.

I agree that there are less deer than there were 10 years ago. As a hunter I wish we had triple the deer we had around here. I also kind of see the other side of the argument and believe maybe there is "enough deer". I still see them dead on the side of the road and our local deer processor posted on Facebook that they had a record gun season. That's just a tiny corner of one county though. I think it varies a lot from one area to the other so it would be a complicated thing to control state wide. For that reason I do have to give the DNR a little credit for doing away with the zones and at least making an effort to look at individual counties. Also eliminating some of the doe only tags and reducing bag limits.

I'm not ready to jump on the fugg the dnr train yet and I do wish we had more deer I just think it's a complicated problem. We'll see what they adjust over the next couple years.

More and more people get their deer processed now...not many do it yourselfers left.

Apples to oranges dude.

All I know is, I've been hearing the same sad song for 7 or 8 years. Every year it's the same... JB, just wait, you'll see. Well I'm still waiting, fellas.

I have seen 2 dead deer along the road on my way to and from work all season.
This is absurd. Not saying you're lying, but this is NOT a representation of the rest of the state. I travel a lot for work... I see dead deer in the roads almost daily.

Not trying to give a representation of the entire state. I use to see several deer in a month dead along the road on my way to work.

So your personal observation on your hunting ground is the the measuring stick for all of Ohio's deer population and is enough to discredit the personal observation of everyone else that's complaining. So it's only true is JB saw it where hes at, if he hasn't yet then everyone else is sniveling underachiever and it's not true. Over the past week I've read every comment pertaining to this subject on the DOW and DNRs facebook pages. I've seen two people stick up for and defended the DNR. One of them retired from the DNR after 30 years, and the other still works for them today. 7-8 years ago the observation was opposite, the vast majority in those in those discussions still believed in the DNR and stuck up for them. Today the vast majority of those commenting are pissed. So if you haven't seen a change over the past 7-8 years then you may want to pull your head out of the sand every once in a while man.

Ohio is not alone with the heard reduction. It has happened in pa and most Midwest states if you look around. Probably needed in some areas but went to far in others. States also need to figure out how to manage public vs private differently.

I will throw this out there for you guys to chew on:

Is it the rise in social media, or are there truly THAT many monsters shot in Ohio every year? On the FB pages I have seen post after post after post of genuine monsters killed this year. All over the state. Is this the norm and we are seeing it more due to the rise in popularity of social media? Or. . . .Is it due to the big boys being forced to move due to lower population of does?

I'll leave my personal opinions out of it.

My head in the sand seems to keep me happy and enjoying deer hunting so I'll just keep it there I think.

And for the last time, I'm not saying we don't have less deer. That's fact. I'm just saying that IMO we still have more than enough to go around. And that number should stabilize, if not increase in the next few years. Nobody is taking anyone's deer away. Just get out there and hunt. Enjoy it, even if you don't see a deer every damn time you climb up a tree.

Imagine if your investment manager said that to you.

Sure you have half the value you used to. That's a fact. I'm just saying you still have plenty of money. And your money should stabilize it's losses or grow over the next few years. Nobody is taking away your ability to invest. Just keep dumping your money in there even if you don't see a return and it's constantly being devalued every time you send me a check.

My response to that fund manager would be.

Mother fucker you lost half my shit. And you've lost your damn mind if you don't think I'm taking that out your ass.

But then imagine if you found out that the fund manager did it on purpose so he could shore up the profits of a 40 billion dollar insurance company.

We're talking deer, Joe... Not money. Stop being ridiculous.
