Don't know what I did. Topped it off with gas. Only took 2gal. Good news: no hole in gas tank. Bad news: still not on trailer. So I jump in seat, turn key, I hear fuel pump hum, turn key and she fired. Good news: it is loaded and I am rolling as soon as I pull out of gas station. Bad news: there is clearly an intermittent issue somewhere in the column or tumbler. This could be a fun one to figure out.

I thought you were going to bypass that?

Yep, I hate intermittent issues like that...
I think in the ignition switch there is only a tiny brass piece to make contact. If not ignition switch, the tumbler could be bad. I'm leaning towards tumbler. It rotates farther than it should sometimes. If no connection made internally, energizer wire doesn't light up electric fuel pump. When jumping across the starter solenoid it cranked but no fire. If no fuel pump running this explains it. I'm leaning towards tumbler because of this.

BUT. . . It has a fiberglass body. These require everything to have its own ground. Each light bulb. Every component must have a ground because it won't ground to body anymore after fiberglass tub swap. So. . .could be as simple as a ground issue. "Simple" ha!

With that ignition switch being outta whack like that I'd bet that'd be the culprit but like Dave said, check the stuff that don't cost anything before spending money....

Never updated this. 82 Jeep (which is the first one I bought and needs some loving) has become my favorite. Not sure why. The fiberglass tub Jeep which looks much better just doesn't do it for me. Battery was replaced. Brake lines replaced, wheel cylinders replaced, and also had to do a master cylinder. She stops. She starts. She goes. Last fall it was puking oil out of the valve cover gasket. I swapped the gasket but it just wasn't sealing up. Topped it with oil and drove it to our other shop. Parked it behind the barn under the carport all winter. This week we checked the oil, pumped the throttle, turned the key and fired her up. Drove her back and repaired valve cover gasket. Cleaned it up. Drove it some. Doesn't seem to be leaking. I have a driver again.

The 78 Jeep that didn't want to start ended up being a wire to the electric fuel pump. Well, three wires spliced into one. That was replaced. Still some funkiness in the ignition switch. Still has steering loose as can be. Bought a tilt steering column. Dropped it at a buddy's shop and told him to swap it whenever he got slow this winter. Guess he stayed busy this winter. It is still sitting there. Might trailer it home and swap the column myself. I really need to sell one of these. I don't have the room to store 2, time to work on 2, money to justify on 2 Jeeps/insurance policies/license plates. Good news is I am still at a break even point on either one of them. Might even make a "little" money if I sold them. Not a ton. Good to know I shouldn't lose my butt if I sold one or both.

Here are some updated pics of the 1982 Jeep. Pulled out passenger side and passenger rear. Painted rims. Put some decent used tires on which hold air.

I left a list of work I needed to get to for my foreman while my wife and I celebrated our anniversary out of state for a few days. My foreman is still driving the 79 CJ7 he got for a graduation gift as his daily driver. Needless to say, he is a total Jeep nut. He took care of work stuff. When the list was getting reduced the first one of my personal projects he addressed was the 82 CJ5. It now has heat. Heater core was replaced. Heater hoses were hooked back up. I'd have rather seen him do more work related stuff than my projects, but I can appreciate him wanting to tinker with the Jeep. I also appreciate him getting me some heat!

Heatis working great. Decided if I was going to be driving it more I need to replace the seat. Driver's seat is horrible. So I pulled the seats to gain access. Yes. Both front seats. Now I have full view of the floors. Ugh. Awaiting some repair panels.

I did do some fabrication in order to have a shift knob. Old one was busted off with no threads. Now it is repaired. I also did a little painting on the rear hitch. Still needs rust repair on tailgate but I don't care. It will be another year.

Oh my the updates. New drivers side seat mocked up. Seat bracket risers were built. Passenger area under seat was replaced. Between the seats where it steps up to go the rear rear seat was replaced. Had to build that section. Made a couple patches on the rear floor. It wasn't too bad. The drivers side rear wheelwell had been patched before and you could see a ton of daylight. It had been modified so the drivers seat could go back further. I think they simply used scrap tin and they didn't fit it well. No more daylight coming thru now.

Some pics of before. Some after. Some of pieces we fabricated. It is all painted with black paint and a couple coats of truck bed liner.

This is still not a show Jeep. Never will be. Body work performed was crude. My work is crude. Structurally, it is coming along. I doubt I ever truly "do this Jeep right" with a full tub off repair. The time and money I have in it will far exceed the value of the vehicle if I go that route. Still good experience. Fun to do. Sense of satisfaction as it comes along.
