It doesn't fit there narrative of sensationalized reporting. Post apocalyptic the world is going to end. When I first moved up here I was shocked by how over dramatic the news media made hurricanes out to be. Obviously if you are going to take a category 3 plus to the face you need to leave. But the reality is as long as you are not within a mile or so of the coast the majority of time you will be fine. Granted you will have trees down, gas station pavilions tore up, and may be without power for a week or so but mostly you'll be fine. In the case of Katrina the vast majority of damage and death was due to flooding after the levees failed. And then Houston the majority of the problem is flooding. That's not always the case with every hurricane.
I was in Hattiesburg Mississippi when hurricane George hit the Mississippi Gulf Coast about 55 miles south as a category 4 in 1998. A group of buddies and I were doing what most people do in a hurricane, you board up the windows, get drunk, and see who can stand up in the front yard the longest.
