We got started with our plots this week. The landowner and my buddy were at the farm on Sunday and disc'ed up some of the fields we plan to put corn and beans in this year. So today I left work a little early and went up to plant some corn.

We have two JD 7000s, a 6 row and a 4 row. I set up the 6 row. Set the 'transmission' for the rate I wanted, lubed all the chains, greased the zerks, filled the seed boxes, then headed out!

The field I planted today is a total of 9 acres. Last year 5 acres were in beans and 4 in corn. We rotate those crops, so today it was 5 acres of corn for me.
Some pics of the progress and finished product. The row markers on this planter do not work, so it got a little wavy as I worked from the center out.
We still need to get our beans and hopefully get them planed in the next couple weeks.

After I got done I headed over to another plot the landowner had hit with the disc. He said that while disc'ing he had ran over a nice shed. He saw it at the very last second and couldn't get stopped before he hit it. Thing is, he couldn't find it after he hit it!! So I went a looking. Took about 2 minutes for me to spot it. Either he is flat ass blind, or he turned it up to the top on a subsequent pass.

I had a 4 day weekend so was back at the plot planting today (kids had school and wife had to work!).
Here is a pic of the field I planted on the 9th. Corn is up, but not real far. The weather has been sort of cold and shitty the past couple weeks. The south half of the field (to the right of the grass strip, about 4 acres) was planted with beans a few days ago by my buddy I hunt with.

Here is another plot we put beans in this year. About 3 acres, he also planted it a few days ago.

Here is the field I 'worked' in today. It was prepped and I put in just over 5 acres of corn. If you look at the left far side of the first pic I also disc'ed and cultivated that section today, about another 3 acres, we plan to put beans there next weekend. My buddy was also there and prepped 2 more fields in the back of the farm (both about 3 acres) for beans next weekend too.

I think my friend may have put a cam or two out over the salt licks today. If not, I plan to get a few out next weekend.

Nice level, great looking ground, and some serious equipment to plant with ends up leading to some great looking plots. Iowa you have the rest of us jealous.

I can't imagine the amount of money involved in these types of projects...really puts into prospective us weekend warriors doing what we can. Lol
