I Just Want to HUNT!

Back in 2015 and a few years prior, I was on leases for two farms from an defunct outfitter in Knox & Licking Counties. The perfect set-up and it is too bad selfish people were involved. To make a long story short, I had several brain surgeries, the group of 3 guys did their own thing while I was recovering and leased the farms individually and split-up. They are from Columbus, Akron and the Carolinas. Even though I have the cash, I was not informed. I live in Ohio, from Pennsylvania, have hunted all of my life and only compound bow hunt. I did not just fall off of the turnip truck! I am not looking to tell anyone how & when to hunt and would appreciate the same.
If anyone needs someone who has all of the necessary equipment, please let me know. I am 57 and retired. I am looking for a descent spot within a couple hours of the Akron area. I muzzleloader hunt as well but that is a bonus! I have just rediscovered this site today so figured I would try. If this is the wrong spot for this post I apologize and will move it if I can.

Hello and welcome to TOO. Lots of good information here about public land. I'm sure someone around your area can give you some tips also. Finding private ground is a little difficult but can surely be done. Be ware of those fly by night lessors and outfitters, best to knock on doors and work something out with the landowner yourself.

I will definitely be knocking on doors! I am used to hunting where I do not feel the need to take all equipment out with me. I like to be able to leave it! Cams, stands, etc.

I have tried public land only to either have someone walking around at prime time or stuff stolen. I just want to sit and watch before I go. You know what I mean!

Welcome to TOO and good luck in your search. Lots of good folks here that live up that way that can prolly steer you in the right direction. Finding, then obtaining permission on good hunting property these days is a struggle for sure.

Stupid. I never dreamed hunting would become stressful. I thought hunting was enjoyable and developed lasting friendships. Used to be excited for “first day”! At least where I came from. Things are a lot different among archery hunters here and I unfortunately, have a bad taste in my mouth. I have since returned to the way it was in PA.

I guess here it is every man for himself...and I am using “man” as a term.

I have a few wall-hangars and a couple Pope & Young entries but could care less. I am in it to enjoy nature and hunting itself.

Who did you lease off of in Knox and licking. Those are my main areas. I know alot of people around here.

One was a eastern farm from a Store owner in Utica and one was an owner mainly of an orchard and market on the west side. I shouldn’t mind telling you the names since having surgery and a life-threatening illness evidently disqualifies you, money or not...

We ain’t all bad peoples in Ohio. I do believe leasing is the cancer of this problem. Hell, it’s hard to even small game hunt anymore because of people and “their” deer. Some of us are going back to the old ways though. I enjoyed my season much more this year and never ran a trail cam and didn’t hardly hunt alone. Felt good!

Welcome to modern day hunting! Hope you find somewhere, a lot other people are in the same situation as you and it probably could happen to a # of us on this forum. Best advise I can give you is, if you find a lease you like, try to sign a long term contract locking it up

I hate to have to give-up the sport I love. I live a few hours from my hometown and need to stay here because of my wife. It is a shame that it has become a dog-eat-Dog world and someday, the bill Co es due for everyone. That is all I will say on the topic!
Meanwhile, if you can get out to the woods, enjoy it. Enjoy your family or friends. It doesn’t last forever so take advantage of it but do not be mean to anyone.
Just like the Alaska or Yukon show, I feel we are the “last”.
