Donating Deer

Anyone ever donate deer? Our freezer is pretty much topped off for the year and could probably only put 1 more in. Thinking about donating one if we get one at camp in the late seasons. Looks like there is a processor in Marietta that does the "farmers and hunters feeding the hungry". Is their any other org or processors that have that in the SE area?

I know a family in need around that way and would gladly pay for processing for them.

I don't and I might sound like a dick for saying this, but I'm not going to kill a deer if it's not going in my freezer. There's other ways I can help people out.

I might sound like a dick too, I’ve donated deer in the past and will continue to do so in the future if I’m fortunate enough to harvest more than the 1 per year that my wife and I need. Have you had bad experiences with donating meat?

No, I'd just rather not kill a deer off any of my spots if my freezer is full. I've never donated meat, we give in other ways.

Gotcha. I respect that. I’m in a bit of a different situation hunting an urban area here in Columbus where the goal is to reduce the herd, thus reducing deer/vehicle accidents and property damage. This is also the first year I’ve been fortunate enough to get on a lease in a rural area (which you already know) and was fortunate enough to harvest a doe on Monday to fill our freezer for the year. Given the chance to harvest another doe or buck, which I would donate, I’ll jump at the chance. Not necessarily just to a charity but to anyone here that could use it. That being said, I probably won’t see another deer the rest of the year [emoji23] cheers to different goals and perspectives![emoji482]

giving away a deer is not hard to do and there are plenty of butchers all over that participate in such programs. I don't mean to change the subject or steer this discussion in the wrong direction, but why would you keep killing deer if you already have as much as, or more than you need?

With our deer herd declining like it is, why kill any more? That one deer could add 1-3 to next years population.

Yes, I can tell you horror stories about the donated deer. Processors get a very shitty deal out of it. (They actually loose money to do them) It's more of a "We look good to the public for doing this" type thing. Therefor, some can care less about the meat. I know of 40 inner tenders that left the shop in a bucket one morning. I seen 22 loins leave the shop for personal use. I also know some trimmings were turned into deer bologna and sold outright later on.

My son and daughter still both have Ohio buck tags and we plan on hunting late gun and late muzzleloader. Not sure if we would harvest a doe or not, but I don't think taking a doe there would hurt anything. Currently we have harvested 1 buck in Ohio. The rest of our deer have come from PA where we have a healthy population in most areas. We actually could fit one more deer in the freezer, but depending on weather and when the deer is shot, I was thinking of donating instead of having to fool around with it.
