To any turtle trappers I have a question. I purchased 4 hoop nets that need coating.. I am having no luck in finding a coating or dip for them.
I could use some guidance.

I have one homemade trap that I should get back into action this year. It was always a lot of fun walking to the trap and seeing the hanging bait bag inside the trap torn to shit! Good luck!!!

What’s wrong with a milk jug, some line, hook and bait? It’s the only way I’ve ever seen it done.

There's a size limit. I would think the hook and line method would make releasing the undersized turtles more problematic. All the serious turtle trappers I know use hoop nets and box style traps.

Gotcha, I’ve never done any of it or seen anyone do it in years. Maybe they didn’t have size limits then or the guys didn’t care.

Yeah the size limit of 12 inches for the shell is why I stopped. I always thought leaving the big females and taking the nice 9 and ten inchers was the thing to do but what do I know lol. I have two shells that hit twelve. I think the marsh trappers can get the twelve inches they need but I was trapping creeks and ditches where the huge turtles are few. I need to read the regs and maybe try it out again this year even if it is a catch and release lol. Never know I might get a legal one?

I'll take pics and post a pic of my trap in case someone wants to make one. It's easy and cheap! The only fault with the box style is if rain is coming and the creek is going to rise you need to pull the trap in case you have a turtle it could drown. I think the hoop traps have floats to prevent this.

2x4 fence 24 inches wide 16 inches high by 48 inches long. It's all one piece of fence except for the ramps for the entrance. The back folds up and is wired in place and is how you get the turtles out. Buddy had some little clips that we used to hold it together or I guess you could just use tie wire. Use a onion bag filled with chicken or fish scrapes wired to the top for bait. I set it so just the first inch or so is out of the water so the turtle can get his head up to breath.

Yea I think the size limit is a fairly new regulation. Two years ago it was 13", then last year it was dropped to 12" I think.
