I've taken deer with four different types.

In order of success...
Shotgun (22ish)
Crossbow (4)
Muzzy (1)
Compound Bow (3)

Took the Super Redhawk a few times...shot at one, couldn't hear for days (except the ringing in my ears) and didn't hit the deer.
