COLUMBUS, OH – The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Division of Wildlife announced that 219,698 deer were taken during Ohio's 2011-12 hunting season, compared to 239,379 in the 2010-11 season. The top three counties with the highest number of deer taken this season were: Coshocton, Licking and Tuscarawas.

Hunters showed support for the two new methods of game-reporting that were made available this year. Since deer season began on Sept. 24, 2011, 44 percent of hunters called in their numbers, 36 percent reported their numbers online and 20 percent traveled to a license agent’s location to report their game.

Ohio's first modern day deer-gun season opened in 1943 in three counties, and hunters reported 168 deer. In 1956, deer hunting was allowed in all 88 counties, and hunters harvested 3,911 deer during a one-week season.

The white-tailed deer is the most popular game animal in Ohio and is frequently pursued by generations of hunters. Ohio ranks eighth nationally in annual hunting-related sales and 10th in the number of jobs associated with the hunting-related industry. Each year, hunting has an $859 million economic impact in Ohio through the sale of equipment, fuel, food, lodging and more.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources ensures a balance between wise use and protection of our natural resources for the benefit of all. Visit the ODNR website at www.ohiodnr.com.

""69 of 88 Counties showed a decline from last year""

Allow me to rephrase that.. ""Hunting in 78% of Ohio is worse than it was last season"

looks like Vinton is one of the few with an increase......:smiley_chinrub:

Yep.. Just talked to the lease president yesterday.. He said meat poaching was far more noticeable this year than in years past.. More shots heard at night etc.. Doesn't surprise me.. Those VC boys will kill their deer one way or another.. They always have.. Resourceful little fuggers. lol

Funny, I just went to the ODNR press releases to look up some of the previous year's final tallies and couldn't find them. Ifn I was the suspicious type I might think they were removed so we couldn't compare previous years.

05-06-----216,443
06-07-----237-316
07-08-----230-400
08-09-----252,017
09-10 ----261,314
10-11-----239,379
11-12---- 219,698

We just had the worst deer season in 6 years and killed only 3,255 more than 7 years ago, even with extra tags and bonus gun.

Yep... That's exactly what I'm saying.. And they've done it forever.. It amazes me how little yall know about how meat poaching works.. lol Do you want deer parts in your freezer without a tag to show how you got it? And don't think they we're scared to take a rifle shot deer to a check station.. In VC there we're two check stations that I know of.. 90% of the time you filled out the paper yourself and the girl handed you a metal tag.. With telecheck they don't even have to do that.

A couple years ago during shotgun I could have driven you buy a trailer down there with 3 deer hanging in the front yard.. Each one with temp tags on them.. Each one of them shot the night before and the tags filled out for the evening before.. See.. But the deer were not there the evening before.. They just mysteriously appeared in the wee morning.. Good luck proving that with a tag on em though.. Take em to the check station before 8pm and they we're good to go... Paperwork legal as the day is long.

They never even look at the deer now. It's so easy to cheat the system now (more so in rural counties) its laughable...

If they were doing it illegal before this change, then I would think they would continue the same trend. I don't see where that would mean they are going to call them in. IF THAT WERE THE CASE, then wouldn't all the counties have an increase in deer kill? Every county has guys that cheat the system. I don't think you are right on this one.

Pretty funny that even the counties that showed an increase was by 100 or less deer from last year. Will be interesting to see what the excuse is for this year lol.

They have continued the same trend... Dude, they physically checked them before.. Don't think they won't hesitate to call them in now.. I explained to you earlier how and why thy do it.. But according to my buddy that lives down there he's seen a noticeable increase in that trend this year... And you're right when you said every county has "A guy"... Maybe up in the flatlands it's "A guy"... Come to southern Ohio and get to know people better. You'll find out many of them don't prefer to be "A guy" but will in a heartbeat if need be... And as deer become more scarce, they aren't going to waste their time staring at leaves to shoot food.. They'll get it done the easiest way they know how.. Either way.. You're only arguing about 100 deer here..

I see plenty of southern Ohio counties that have a big decrease in the deer kill, Vinton is one of the few that increased. Oh, and I said every county has "guys" that cheat the system. There are plenty of them here in the flatlands let me assure you of that. How easy do you think it is to shoot one with a rifle around here?
