About 40,000 state laws taking effect at the start of the new year will change rules about getting abortions in New Hampshire, learning about gays and lesbians in California, getting jobs in Alabama and even driving golf carts in Georgia.

Several federal rules change with the new year, too, including a Social Security increase amounting to $450 a year for the average recipients and stiff fines up to $2,700 per offense for truckers and bus drivers caught using hand-held cellphones while driving.

NBC News, the National Conference of State Legislatures, The Associated Press, and other organizations tracked the changes and offered their views on the highlights.
Many laws reflect the nation's concerns over immigration, the cost of government and the best way to protect and benefit young people, including regulations on sports concussions.

Eight states will raise the minimum wage, NBC News reported. They include Arizona, Oregon, Washington, Montana, Colorado, Ohio, Vermont and Florida, NBC News said. San Francisco will become the first city to raise its minimum wage above $10 per hour. The new $10.24 minimum is nearly $3 above the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour, set in 2009.

Buncha crap. I am with 57. Let's get rid of the stupid ones and get back to the basics. How about a balanced budget requirement for the federal government? How about maybe just thinking about agreeing on a budget. . . that is not $3trillion in the red every year? How about instead of paying to institutionalize someone that will never get out of prison, we just kill them? Maybe like if you kill someone, we kill you back? How about we quit giving more money back to people on taxes than they contribute? How about a law to not only reduce the deficit spending, but maybe we start figuring out how to pay off some of our debt? How about we throw out all the greenies keeping us from drilling our own resources and opening new refineries and reduce the laws/fees/permits to drill again? How about a law that says "if we stop you because you look like a terrorist it is not profiling, it is because we already had reasonable belief you were a terrorist and the c-4 strapped under your friggin' turban just proved it"? How about any members of the governing body cheating on their taxes gets tarred and feathered? How about if you cannot come up with proof you are a native born citizen of the USA, you cannot run for President? Oops, we already have this one. How about we just enforce it? Need I continue?
