Yeah, evidently sometime during the very early part of the antler growing process the pedical surface has a thin membrane form over it. If a buck during this period is not careful, things can get freaky. Long story short, if any of this membrane gets disturbed or removed and lands somewhere like: it's leg,forehead or it's eyesocket, an antler will grow there. Antlers when in velvet, grow as fast as 1.5 to 2 inches a day and this has scientist and doctors attention.

I read this in NAW in a Dr. James Kroll article a year or two ago.
