My season in a nut shell

This evening was a mess, wind was swirling and completely out of control. It rained, snowed, sleeted, was windy and times and calm at others. I opted to stay up top of the hills to have a better chance at beating that wind. I hunted a stand labeled Jim2 and I’m glad I did. I seen a total of 6 deer. 5 were for sure doe and they came by me way to fast for anything to happen, something had them spooked. They came from by the truck, but I wouldn’t think a truck would freak them out like this. The last deer was doing that stupid sideways run like it had been shot at! Maybe someone was hunting across the property line? Not sure.

As the light faded it turned to that beautiful big snow flake falling. I was in total peace with just watching the flakes fall as if each one was placed there by the mighty one himself. Just about out of all light and I see movement...CLOSE! Inside 30 yards kind of close. Huge body but couldn’t make out if it had headgear or not. Heart pounding harder then someone stomping turds down a shower drain, I still didn’t squeeze that trigger. I just couldn’t be “that guy”, the guy you let come hunt and he killed the ghost buck after he shed.

I waited until I felt comfortable that deer was long gone and snuck back to the truck grinning the entire time!

Sometimes the hunt is more enjoyable then the harvest. Just take it all in, relax, have fun. Sometimes slowing down in life brings the most pleasure and cleanses the soul. We all need days like the one you just had where you felt at peace.

Jim 2 is a good low pressure spot. Good thinking hunting that stand. It don't have a lot of shots but the deer will pass by it.
Glad you enjoyed the hunt.
Some of the neighboring properties to ours don't get hunted. Some were hunted this year for the first time in years. And everyone knew we needed to lower the doe population this year and tried harder to take does. The area Dave is hunting is a tough area to hunt with a bow. There are not a lot of good spots for stands and the deer seem to stay out in the crp far enough to be out of bow range. There are so many doe bedded everywhere that its hard to make your way into a stand without getting busted. We had to take some stands down because it was impossible to access them.
Still a couple spots you haven't hit yet Dave. Jim 3 is a good spot inside the woods and a good staging area. Jim 6 you will see a lot of deer but they may be out of range. But jim 6 is close to where the bucks bed. North or east winds only, Good luck man.

Thanks for all the info Jake, you’ve been a wealth of information. I bet that Jim2 is on fire during the rut, looked like a great cruising spot. Whatever that big bodied deer was had to of been bedded by that pond.

"Sicker than Dustin's shower habits..." lmao

Great read Dave. Always good to get insights from other hunters as to how they view their season. Good perspectives in there!

This season has been a great success! These past few days it’s been a great joy to have something to pursue. Seeing game sure helps the mindset, but that’s for another thread all together.

I ain’t sure I will go this evening. Might happen, but it’d be a long shot. Friday looks better right now.

Just that quick I made up my mind. Low impact has been key for this place...I’ll go back Friday. Thinking I’ll go in around noon and find my way to Jim3. Let it chill out for a couple days and get after it hard the last 3.

Good luck brother! I really appreciate your appreciation for simply being there in the moment. You've been a good teacher to me this year in that regard and I often think of you (not in a gay way like Michael does) when I begin to feel myself losing sight of what matters when I'm out there chasing deer. Might be simplier if we didn't get lost in our own heads, but then again, it might not be as entertaining either!

I am 199% my own worst enemy! Only one person can control that though...it ain’t the easiest thing, and I’m not always the best at it, but I’m doing my best.

“Even if I fail today, I’ll try harder tomorrow.”

That’s what I tell myself when it’s real rough.
