Welcome to TOO. When we did trout lines in the 1950's we used worms or chicken livers.

Welcome aboard Austin. Pull up a chair, take a look around, and ask all the questions you want. There great people and great info all around here. Ive had success with chicken or beef soaked in strawberry koolaid and liquid garlic.

We catch some catfish on soft plastics that we're targeting for bass... Always seem too have catfish in shallows near deep water... We fish the Ohio river a lot and any shoal you can find will hold them as well as close too the locks/dams....

On lakes I'd say points, on creek mouths... If you have some bait shops around those guys get fed info on a daily basis and are a good source of info as well....

Welcome Austin! Which lake? I've always done well on lakes with Creek Chubs, worms or chicken livers. Different baits and presentation will produce different sizes and species. So depending on my target, I change them up. I used to save some deer liver to use as well, but I just don't fish as much as I used to.

I've caught some nice flatheads on the Maumee river trolling crankbaits in deeper water.

I just ran across this post. I catch channel cats with a Rebel crayfish crankbait. I've had my best luck with the brown and orange belly, but some will hit the natural colored one too. 2" and 3" models will catch walleye/saugeye, channel cats, smallmouth, crappies and striped bass. All of this has been while trolling in a kayak, at a slow speed and in about 10 to 16 feet of water. (y)
