You are talking about different scenarios where shooting a dog may be justified. I'm talking about a dog coming into your property and chasing wild animals. I'm pretty sure if it's a continuous problem law enforcement can be called and the owner issued a fine.
I don't disagree with you. I prefer that method depending on the owners. If I know they will be nothing but problems for trying to reach a peaceful resolution sometimes it's better if you don't involve them.

Had a problem 2 yr's ago,2 dogs running the crap out of deer everytime we were hunting also had pictures of the dogs on trail cams almost daily.
Drove around the block and saw the dogs at their home, buddy called the warden and sent them the pics.
Warden paid them a visit, they were warned and after 2 times they would be fined, told them their dogs are supposed to be leashed.
Well next time out there they are running deer again and more pics on cams.
Warden paid another visit, havn't had a problem since,i do believe they got rid of the problem dogs..
And these dogs were running over a mile from their home.
Just glad i didnt catch the big german shepherd in a snare cause he was huge.

In the woods I have a lot more patience than I would at home. If my kids are playing in the yard and a dog acts aggressive, that would be a different story.

Here's the thing about being on stand and seeing a dog running by.... We've all been there... but here's the difference.... Fido the house dog or Josie the 7k working dog wear collars, haven't been roaming the woods for weeks on end and don't look like they haven't been maintained in a month... We've all seen at one time or another those pets that get out vs the stray that's been out chasing shit for weeks... If your hunting a farm chances farmer Al has a couple if not a dozen farm dogs running around....
You know the difference, and use your common sense....

This is right.

Paying a fine to the state does not compensate me for my loss.

So who's fault is it when the wind shifts or coyotes come along? It's hunting folks, deal with the fact that some things happen beyond your control.

I don't think anyone here is saying it's OK to let your dogs run loose. Shit happens and dogs break chains, sneak out of the door, dig holes, etc. When that happens repeatedly is when it becomes an issue. I couldn't ever shoot a dog for running deer, again it's not the dogs fault.

ive got a dog now that anytime he could get away he was off and running he was even going thru an electric fence at times. he doesnt do it now but he was a damn meat head for awhile i told my neighbors if he gets out and is chasing deer or fighting with there dogs to shoot him where he stands, i almost did it myself but my daughter wouldnt of talked to me if i did. hes turned out to be a good dog after he got use to our place and grew out of the puppy stage.

i remember rabbit hunting with my dad and his buddys this guy brought his dogs that were suppose to be awesome. well one wouldnt leave the deer alone and the guy told dad if that dog runs that deer back by you shoot it. i dont have dogs that run deer, sure as shit here comes the dog running back by still on that deer dad shot it as it came by, the guy said i cant believe you shot my dog. dad said you just told me to dont tell me to do something you dont want done. i dont think they ever talked much after that.

Are you meaning the loss of the deer?

I place a high value on those frosty November sunrises. If something happened and I was no longer able to participate in this grand tradition I would be one bitter son of a bitch if the memory of my last hunt would be that of a stupid dog.

A lot of time and money wrapped up in deer season to let a dumb ass irresponsible dog owner ruin it for you. Sure would be nice if the deer hunters could get compensated for someones dog ruining their hunt, after all, it's a big investment.

I understand it's a lot of time and money to hunt as I hunt too. But you guys are really saying if your neighbors dog got off it's leash and ruined your hunt you would shoot it? It's called hunting not shooting folks. Sometimes things happen that are out of your control. And everybody here calling the dog owner irresponsible is a hypocrite (as long as it's not a continuous problem). When I need to find the perfect person I guess I should look no further than this forum...

You and I both know there are a bunch of irresponsible dog owners and they are usually the ones that let the dogs run loose.

True but I'm not one of them so I'm looking at it from my perspective. My yard is fenced and I've put a lot of time into training my dog so if she were to get out it would be an accident
