Any history with them being repeat offenders?
Sounds like he had them confined to a fenced in area. He opened the gate to leave for work and they got loose. I've read a bunch of the articles, none stated if this was a reoccurring problem.

The fella was convicted of killing a companion animal. That's a pet, not a feral animal.
The definition under the law for companion animal is dogs, cats, or any other animal traditionally kept indoors. It is not defined such as if the dog is someone's pet, a stray, or wild. It singled out dogs and cats but then added a lovely statement that would include somebody's fucking parakeet.

It's a shit law that is very shittily written and has animal rights nut job written all over it. The law literally says failing to supply a companion animal with quality nourishing food is a felony. Well who defines the legality of "quality" or "nourishing". Say your dog is in your backyard while you are at work and knocks over his water bowl. Felony per the law. You can try to make the excuse that the dog knocked over the bowl, prosecution would argue that you should have taken the extra steps to ensure that the bowl couldn't be knocked over. Bam felony.

Your dog runs out in the street and gets ran over breaks his leg, you don't feel like putting the $1,500 vet bill so you shoot him. Bam felony.

The law says that you cannot needlessly kill a companion animal. What is the legal definition of "needless". I can guarantee your definition and that of some hippie animal rights person is vastly different.

Say I get a new coonhound and the damn thing won't hunt worth a shit or wont stop runni g deer so I shoot it. Nothing new it's called a cull dog. Does that fall under their definition of "needlesly kill"? I can guarantee you too A lot of people who have never had working dogs that are sitting in that jury box it does. So I'm supposed to put this worthless dog back in the kennel and feed him for the next twelve years , for what, so he can lay around and lick his balls?

What they have essentially done is added an animal species to a protected class and made it a felony to wrong them. It's lunacy.

I don't think anyone would argue that it's wrong to shoot your neighbor's dog for shiting in your yard, but to make a law that makes it a felony to shoot any dog simply because it's a dog is stupid.

Funny dog story. When I was growing up we had trouble with the trailer park dogs way down the road getting in our trash. I kept my BB gun by the front door on trash day and would only pump It up 4 times.

I was still asleep before school one morning when my mother came running in my room in absolute panic and hysteria telling me to get up and get dressed.

My mother saw this little Terrier looking dog in the trash and not wanting to wake me decided to put some sting on him. She got my BB gun from beside the door and sent one. Problem was I already had the gun pumped-up 4 times and she pumped it about another 5 or so. She brain panned that little rat dog right there on the side of the road. One in a million shit shot she would hit him in the head just right to make him go full retard with a stupid BB from 50 yards.

So here I was 7 in the morning in my boxers and a pair of boots with my BB gun trying to finish off this dog flopping around all retarded in the ditch.

I still razz her about that one

Very early in this thread I said we need a law to protect us against this one. For reasons you've stated.

I had a real boring day at work and kept myself occupied, lol. I'm not against killing a nuisance animal at all. This law says I can't, I don't think that's right.

Everyone has their own viewpoint on this and none of which are "wrong." Some people place extreme value on their deer hunting... Some on their dog(s). Me, I place way more value on my dog than a deer. She retrieves more pounds of fowl every fall than pounds of venison put in most serious deer hunters' freezers. If she ever got loose and ran off, I would just have to hope she ran into someone who's value scale didn't tip the other way. And if she did, I'd try like hell to persuade that hunter that my level of value is much greater than his, by losing my shit and swinging. Lmao

Ive shot peoples dogs that where harassing livestock and there are laws stating that is legal. i dont see how dogs harassing big game without a handler and or out of season should be dealt with any differently.
Like joe said godderds laws is extremely poorly written.

Pretty much a reflection of my own thoughts and values to my dogs.

I didn’t want to start a new thread because I think it goes along with this topic. I did some pot stirring in this one and made some points that I still agree with. One of them being that we needed a law to protect us against goddards law. Now we have something else on the books to further goddards law. Wrong direction folks...telling me I can’t kill a cat getting into my trash without becoming a 3rd degree felon.

It’s a companion animal and you would have to have proof that it was indeed “feral” not a stray or neighbors free range pet. 😡

Just like dog owners having a leash and tagging law, but not for cats. Irresponsible cat owners is my complaint here and this law. Pisses me off

Dude they lose it when you do that. They think their damn cat has the right to go wherever tf it pleases. But god forbid some stranger come near their property. They'll call the law and want them thrown in prison.

IIRC cats do not have a leash law because they are not allowed by law to be an outside animal. The moment they leave a persons control they are considered feral. I remember reading in the ORC the number of days before a farm animal was considered federal and open season. I think cats were like 0 days.

Boy I’d love to see that. I’ll walk out the front door and dust my neighbors cat right off the porch!
