Not just for commuting though. Every time I borrow something from my FIL it seems like I'm also borrowing one of his trucks to pull his big ass trailers. Granted he has three trucks and as he says "I can only drive one at a time" it still bugs me. I don't mind borrowing his tractor, quads, forklift, or trailer etc, but I don't like borrowing vehicles. Add in the room for the kid and future kids. I also do a 100 mile daily commute on a 2 lane state route, with the risk of a 60 mph+ head on accident I want the transfer of energy to be in my favor. Just a whole host of things.

Here's a pic he sent me recently. all 69 & 70 Chevelle frames.

OK, well now we're talking. I did not want to assume.

I recommend being like your FIL, and buy a GM. When comparing quality in the diesel world, Dodge owns it in the engine closely followed by GM. Ford for interior quality and outside looks, but GM right there. Drivetrain wise, GM all the way. You can't compare your small truck and "high quality" sports car experiences here, it's not apples to apples. If you can get by the GM interiors and some of the older body styles (like 05-07), then you will find that GM will come out on top.

I state these things from experience and from other direct family members/friends. I have owned 2 Duramax's (01 and current 14), my BIL has had all makes and always comes back to a GM (even though he just bought a 17' Dodge dually), uncles, cousins, friends, etc. I would buy a Ford but they just haven't gotten it right since they killed the 7.3L. I love the looks of the new Ford body and back to the 08, especially in a two-tone white with tan bottom. Their interiors are of high quality and their drivetrain is close to GM. Dodge interiors are getting there, their body lines are not my favorite (but RAM has gotten better than Dodge), but they lack in the drivetrain arena.

You seriously need to start listing years or a budget. The used truck market is stupid right now and you may find that you will be looking at a new one before you know it. A truck with 100K is still going for $30K and 5-7yrs old! Be like your FIL, buy a GM, 2007+ (but not a 2011).

Thanks Adam. I'm not opposed to 35 to 40k range. But more important to me is the ability to put 3 years 90k on it and it not cost me 20k in depreciation. Can't really do that with a gas truck. If you buy a Gas truck with 150k on the dash it better come with a Chilton manual and a stocked toolbox because you're going to need it in short order. On the other hand 150k on a diesel isn't really viewed as high mileage.

The TCO study above agrees with your "buy GM" stance. I agree with you that their body style is the most appealing. I would rank interior styling and quality as way behind that of Ford and Dodge.

And GM BS like this pisses me off. How hard is it to make a paint that doesn't do this. It's not like mankind hasnt been painting plastic shit for 50 years now.

I'm not the guy to talk. I have an Element, and 95 Toyota T100 I use to run around. My 06 Dodge with 5.9L diesel is used to work only. If it isn't pulling a trailer, pushing snow, etc., it sits. Thus the reason it is under 100k miles. That baby NEEDS to last. I wouldn't own a new anything unless it was gas.

I suggest you wait. In the next 12mo or less you are going to see some crazy deals. The auto sales industry is cyclical. They keep selling more and more new vehicles to less and less qualified buyers. The delinquency and default rates on auto loans is soaring. Rental car companies are filing bankruptcy. They are what fuels the used car market. If they can't sell their used cars, they don't buy new cars. If they are bankrupt, they won't buy as many. All of this is going to hurt the auto industry in the next 12mo.

A very interesting perspective to look at also. Not to throw salt in any wounds but you would think the near overnight collapse of the oil and NG industry in Ohio would have thrown a ton of fleet and personal trucks on the market. Not seeing it though. Unless you want a used water hauler. Those are everywhere.

All those guys working on the rover pipeline by my house have some real nice trucks. Even the company trucks look to be brand new 2500 Silverado's.

Dude trim your finger nails lol! That is horrible and I would not be happy either, no matter what make or model.

I have just over 65k miles in 3yrs 1 month and a recent trade in offer was just $9k below what I paid for it off the lot new. 10qrt oil changes, 3 fuel filters and a new set of tyres is all she has cost me.

Have you ever owned a HD truck? What kind of parking lot do you have at work? Driving a larger truck every day isn't for everyone.

Am I right in assuming your talking about getting rid of both current rides and only having one?

I also want to bring the Tundra back into this. It's not a diesel, but you can easily put 90,000 miles on one and it still be worth damn good money. In the $35-40 range you can get a pretty damn nice brand new one.

Plenty of outdoor non garage parking. Yeah getting rid of both rides. The caddy still has good trade in at 154k miles. The Lil Colorado has 220k miles, the trans slips bad and the 4x4 went out last January. It's a junker at this point. Private party is only 3k fixed. Probably take 1k and a few weekends turning wrenches to get her in shape.

Idk man...I've been fighting the same arguments with myself. I own what you are looking for and I'm not sure I'd suggest it. I didn't mind having the truck when it sat in the driveway most of the time. Now that I use it to commute...I find myself disliking it more and more. I feel like other options without the diesel would fit my needs better. Maybe I'm just getting old...

Talking kids, another pain in the ass is getting that giant ass car seat in and out of the damn thing. With a Mega Cab, you can't just reach back and pop the binky back in either. You gotta pull over. Maybe these are just short people problems, but for sure things to consider.

Lol, I feel your pain Giles and I'm only in a crew cab. Try having 3 car seats back there. I have a freaking loading sequence to be able to get the middle one buckled in, then do the outside ones. Something hits the floor during driving and it's just me, it waits. Come to think of it, what type of vehicle with any type of rear leg room can you reach back while driving and hand something to a child in a 5pt harness or can't reach forward at all?

The diesel is only a waste if you don't need it for either mileage or towing. A 3/4 or 1-ton is a life style choice when you need more than just an empty bed or to have some umph when hauling/towing. If only doing it a few times a year, get a gasser.

You have been hee-hawing on ure truck like my wife to decide where to eat.lmao

The thought process there is these damn hippies recommend kids to be in a rear facing seat until 2 now. It used to be 1 year or 20 lbs. Sterling will probably be rear facing until 1.5. When we have another there's another year and a half. Either way I'm going to have to deal with a big ass rear facing car seat for another two years minimum. The extended cabs don't let the wife and I gangster lean if there's a big ass kids racing seat in the back facing backwards. Gotta go bigger in the back.

Yup...it's big choice to make. I'd love to keep it as a dedicated tow rig but the wife is against me owning it just to sit. I'd rock the shit out of an old Chevette every day!

Lol, WTF, u guys are just pushing all the buttons. After spending 4yrs in the crash test industry with an ATD manufacturer, I promise you it is in everyone's best interest to keep them rear facing as long as possible. Hippies? More like extremely intelligent makes and models from across the globe!

We own a 3/4 ton diesel and a town n country. Sounds like a mini van is what you are really searching for Joe. Fuggin thing is spunky and gets 23 in town and 27-28 highway:smiley_clap: Hit a button and doors and shit open for you. When the little ones are big enough to handle themselves, they just crawl right in. You just have to get in and strap them in. Same setup as my truck, 3 more car seats. Fugg, we have 6 car seats not counting grandparents.....lawdy.
