Scott A. Zody, a former chief of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ Division of Wildlife, is being remembered as a dedicated public servant.

Zody, 50, was found dead on Wednesday at his home near Sugar Grove, south of Lancaster. It appeared he died of natural causes, a county official said.

Zody was an assistant director and served as interim director of the department before heading its Division of Wildlife from November 2011 until October 2015.

He left that job to become chief of staff/chief deputy auditor for Fairfield County Auditor Jon Slater. Zody said it was an opportunity he could not pass up because having to spend less time commuting each day meant he would get to spend more time with his family.

ODNR Director Jim Zehringer notified staff members by email and asked everyone to keep Zody’s wife, Beth, and their children, Nathan and Lauren, in their thoughts and prayers.

Jack Shaner, of the Ohio Environmental Council, described Zody as a lifelong conservationist, dedicated public servant and loyal family man.

“This is a big loss for Ohio,” Shaner said by email.

Zody had been the Fairfield County commissioners’ clerk/manager from August 2007 through 2010. But he spent much of his career at ODNR, where he began as a legislative liaison in 1992.

He also had served on the Berne Union school board. Zody was known for his affable manner and his love of hunting and the outdoors.

Very sad. He was such a good guy. I just don't get it... He was in great shape. At least he appeared to be.

Very sad indeed. He was a good man.

There is a sporting clay shoot being organized with 100% of the proceeds going to support the education of his children. I'll share more information as it becomes available.
