Went for a couple me walk today with my boys (guy time, doing guy things). In the excitement of wanting to get out and enjoy everything I didn't spray us down... We sure paid the price!

Tick count:

Dad-7

Levi-4

Mushroom count: 0

Sheds: 0

Found lots and lots of ramps though.

Been lucky so far, today is the first time I've even sprayed down.... None yet.... I walked 4 miles around fields and some higher weeds so far so good....

We should've sprayed down, it was my fault. Just trying insure that others don't make the same mistake. It really did take some fun out of a great day.

Awesome score on the ramps Dave! Enjoy them! What we ate at the chicken house(deer camp) tonight was delicious!!! Ron wrapped em up in foil with butter and Lawreys and pepper and cooked em over the grill for 10-15 minutes! Very tasty!

Went turkey scouting this am and pulled one off me. What's sawyers there giles?

I've never used it personally but I've read up a ton on it. People use it on hunting clothing to keep bugs off them. Odorless and other good stuff. Can buy it at Walmart. Comes in a yellow and black (or maybe dark brown) box.

Just looked it up - sounds like some good stuff. Will be picking some up for sure:

  • Insect-killing repellent for your clothing is effective against ticks, chiggers, mites and mosquitoes;
  • as effective as 100 percent DEET
  • Lasts up to 6 weeks (or 6 washings);
  • will not stain or damage clothing, fabrics, plastics, finished surfaces, or outdoor gear
  • Odorless after drying; ideal for use while hunting
  • Permethrin is non-toxic and registered for use by the U.S. EPA
  • Repellent has been exclusively treating uniforms for the U.S. and Canadian militaries for almost 30 years.

The more I read the more I like:

Permethrin is the name of a chemical that is synthesized in a lab down to the molecular level to mirror the compounds extracted from Chrysanthemums. There has never been any toxicity to humans or dogs reported. The chemical is the exact same thing found in most over the counter dog treatments. The dog treatments are oil based to remain on the skin for a longer duration.

The aerosol is not toxic to humans, but there are dispersants in it which are not good for you. Don't be stupid and spray it into your face or breathe it in while treating your clothes or gear. The reason they tell you not to put it on your skin is because it is not EFFECTIVE on your skin for more than 30-45 minutes. Your skin metabolizes the chemical and it loses all effectiveness shortly after application.

When wet it bonds to the fibers of your clothing (and hair like it does on dogs) and forms a bond so tight that it will retain some level of effectiveness for a duration of 42 months or 6 washings. You should retreat your clothing after the sixth washing or once per year for your gear like sleeping bags.

Some materials that are waterproof will not properly absorb the chemical before it off gasses and it will not be effective (tents). Bottom line, it's NOT toxic to humans or dogs when wet or dry, and not toxic to cats or fish after dried and bound to clothing. Don't breathe it in when you're treating stuff...
