Thanks all, but I have to admit, it doesn't feel so "well done". That first arrow really bothers me. I think of myself as an ethical hunter, having said that, when I couldn't get a good anchor, I should have never touched the release. I still can't figure out how the shot angle happened either. I have never, knowingly, took a shot at a deer that was facing me. I know better than that. So why did I? I didn't even realize he had turned before I sent the arrow.
It's fortunate that things happened the way they did, I'm grateful for that, but in the back of my mind I know it could have gone a lot different. I very easily could have ended up with a seriously wounded buck run off to a long and miserable death.
I keep replaying it in my mind and I know that first shot will bother me for a while.
