Good stuff buddy! Well done!!!

Thanks all, but I have to admit, it doesn't feel so "well done". That first arrow really bothers me. I think of myself as an ethical hunter, having said that, when I couldn't get a good anchor, I should have never touched the release. I still can't figure out how the shot angle happened either. I have never, knowingly, took a shot at a deer that was facing me. I know better than that. So why did I? I didn't even realize he had turned before I sent the arrow.
It's fortunate that things happened the way they did, I'm grateful for that, but in the back of my mind I know it could have gone a lot different. I very easily could have ended up with a seriously wounded buck run off to a long and miserable death.

I keep replaying it in my mind and I know that first shot will bother me for a while.

Sounds like a big case of buck fever to me! There are times where I kick myself and say why did you do it but the fact of the matter is their presence alone can unnerve the better of us. The first deer I ever spined I thought for sure I was aiming in the lower third of the deer but I was over 25 feet and it was at maybe 10 yards quartering away. Still have the broadhead stuck in the section of the spine and I couldn't have hit that more centered. Maybe this moment in your hunting career will season you better for the next time where you (and I) take that extra deep breath to clear our heads and make that perfect shot.

Shit happens man, roll on. I think your mind was in repetition mode. Draw, anchor, squeeze. It was just the next step in the process. Don't beat yourself up over it, it all worked out and that deer didn't suffer.
