The early goose season is almost upon us, fellas. And right now is the time to get those short-reeds back out of your blind bags and knock the dust off of them.

I'm a long-time fan of Field Hudnall and his brother, Clay. In my opinion, Field is one of the best hunting videographer/editors out there today. He's down to earth, truly loves what he does, and never hesitates to help out fellow outdoorsmen and women. A few years ago, he left Zink Calls and eventually started his own company... known today as Field Proven Calls.

Recently, Field announced on facebook that he was releasing a 20-step short reed goose calling instructional series on youtube, titled "Mastering the Goose Call." This is a true testament to his character and desire to help fellow waterfowl hunters. Most experienced callers, competition guys especially, are hesitant to truly share the "secrets" on running a short reed goose call. In this series, Field breaks really breaks it down... from the most basic basics up to advanced-level notes and cadences. Currently, only steps 1 through 11 have been posted on youtube... but stay tuned, as he's been uploading each new step every few days or so.

Whether you're a guy who's never touched a short reed goose call, or a relatively experienced caller with maybe some bad habits (myself included)... I highly recommend watching every step of this series.

I will be watching these!! I really like Field and Clay. I met them a few years ago at the fin during one of their waterfowl seminars. I enjoy anything the Hudnalls put together.

IMHO, Zink Calls just hasn't been the same since they left...

I need to spend some serious time learning to do this...

Don't feel bad, I haven't sat down and done it myself either... and goose season starts Saturday! The good thing for you is that it'll probably come pretty easy to you. Since I've been running a short-reed for a few years, I probably have a lot of bad habits that are going to be tough to get rid of.

Pay special attention to Step 17 here. IMO, the "Moan" is one of the most effective pieces of goose vocabulary. Used alone or in combination with other notes, the moan adds a ton of realism to your calling.
