Freshwater Mussels

I have a bunch of freshwater mussels in my private pond.

I was wondering if anybody could tell me if they are edible, and if so has anybody tried them. It seems like they would be comparable to clams.

Any recipes would be appreciated also.

I understand they are protected in Ohio on public waterways, but if they are in a private pond I would think I could eat them, and would like to try.

From what I just googled most are edible but may not taste good. It was warned about their potential toxicity since they are filters. It was also noted that they probably don't contain much meat.
