Why should I retire in Ohio?

So help me out here. I'm seriously considering retiring in Ohio. I've seen several jobs on usajobs.gov in Dayton and even a few in Columbus that I might qualify for.

Now, I'm just about guaranteed a job making 80K to 110K a year in MD or VA. Why should I move back to Ohio and get a job starting out at 50K to 70K a year?

I've got a few pro's already.

1. Ohio doesn't tax military retirement.
2. If there ever was a time to buy a house w/land in Ohio now is it. I can get a bigger house with more land for much less in Ohio.
3. All of my family lives in Ohio.
4. Ohio has bigger deer.

you could get paid more in MD or VA but the cost of living is higher, thats why the pay is high. Plus, people who work in Washington commute from VA and MA..Noone wants to actually live there

Looks like you've laid out some pretty good reasons there TF...

My guess is that the wages are slightly higher in the MD, VA areas to offset the higher cost of living, plus having to pay people more to come to those areas? Not that Ohio is the promise land by any means, but it ain't all that bad either. After traveling a bit for work here and there (not anywhere close to the amount of ground that it looks like you've covered), and spending time in some of the more crowded parts of the country, I know that for me, I want nothing to do with 'em. I want to get away from the cities, congestion, traffic, crowding, and so on. Ohio still gives you the best of both worlds. You can live within a reasonable drive to work in most of the major metro areas, yet still be a short drive away from it all and into some good hunting. Plus no taxes on military retirement sounds like a nice bonus as well.

You guys have covered it. Curran hit what I was thinking well. The ability to live in a more rural area, yet be close to the city is a plus. Traffic in Ohio isn't as bad for the commute as compared to DC or something.

I will elaborate on one of your points TF. Family! Someday you will have grandkids if you are lucky. I know it is a chore to see my extended family. If you have family here already, it would be nice to settle close to them. Many of my relatives that moved away from family at an early age are starting to move back closer to their families. As time goes by, it is inevitable there will be health issues for everyone. The ability to be at a hospital in a couple hours or less, close to a family member in times of need, would be important to me.

Plus don't forget when doing the job search to contact me. A great friend of mine has been at DSCC for at least ten years as a logistics specialists/manager of some sort. Funny thing is I know everything, I mean everything about this dude but he can't talk about his job. Which makes me try and get him drunk so he will talk ;) Now I wouldn't let him if he did start to talk but it is the challenge of it!

Good luck with USAjobs.gov. From everyone i've talked to it is usually nothing more than a front and a giant waste of time. It's not as efficient as the public job engines where you submit a resume and apply then interview.. USA Jobs requires a resume, but you have to fill out an application for each job you apply for. You will spend 3 hours filling out their "application form" only to do it again for another job.. All that and you will never get a so much as an email saying it was received much less a call for an interview. Plus jobs are posted for like 1 -3 months.. And if you're lucky and it's a real position, (vs one created with a specific person in mind already) They don't even look at candidates until after the job closes, then they take another 1-2 months for calls, interviews.. You know how most Gov jobs are filled. 9 times out of 10 they already have a person for the position but law requires the position to be listed publicly for a period of time.

If you want a government job. USAJOBS is not the way to do it... Network, call, email. Talk with people and find a position that will hire you.. USAJOBS is a technicality that must be completed after you get the job, but before you can fill the position.

As far as Ohio.. Deer hunting is the only reason I still live in this shithole.

4th highest taxes in the nation. (all inclusive)
6th worst business environment and jobs reflect it.
Police state. I saw more cops between Cincinatti and Columbus than i did the entire time between the gulf coast and Cincy.
Housing market is crap. Even if it recovers it will fail again due to to many cookie cutter home builders.
We have 4 seasons, Winter, more winter, still winter, and road construction.
Absolute utter lack of sunshine for 80% of the year.
Anything service industry sucks. Waitresses, customer service, etc.
Assholes that don't let you merge on the highway because heaven forbid you get ahead of them.
Everyone is in a big ass giant hurry.

Joe, that is so true. All you have to do is go south of Columbus, and the attitudes of people get so much better. The more south you go, the better everything!

That is very true. I have said many times everything south of 70 and east of 71 should either be it's own state.. No way they are part of the rest of Ohio...

The only problem is the top 4 jobs are as follows.. Rough neck timber, road crew, paper mill, kenworth.

I love Ohio. But I live in the good part... :smiley_coolpeace:

You love letting a bunch of city liberals and welfare queens decide what is best for your country living? I would agree with you.. There is great benefit living in the good part.. However we're all still ruled my inner city voting morons.

I don't. But I don't let it ruin my day, month, year, or general outlook on life. I just live my life day to day and worry about the things I can control. It's a narrow minded, naive way to live life, but that's the great part of being from small town America. It's always been that way and I'll do my part to hold down the fort...

TF, move to Ohio and get a job on a Rig as a Rough Neck over here in PA. They Make around $110,000 a year + bonus. Here is the interesting thing, that $110,000 is actually working 6 months out a year. They work 2 weeks, 12 hours a day and then are off for 2 weeks. You would make more as you advance. Just saying.
