Forecast... the river will continue rising to near 57.5 feet by
Thursday morning may 19th. This crest exceeds the flood of 1927
by 1.3 feet... the flood of 1937 by 4.3 feet... and the flood of 2008
by 6.5 feet.
* Impact at 55 feet... Highway 61 north of Vicksburg is flooded.

To put that in contrast. That's the main highway between Vicksburg and Baton Rouge That's like I-75 flooding...

highway 61

The Ms and Yazoo river Valley train station. To the right the Yazoo river. Behind it the Ms river. To the left the levy protecting Vicksburg.

Here is was Wednesday.

Dry Vicksburg to the left. The rail station and museum to the right.

But we're southernors.... No sense worrying fretting over it.... Da feesh is bitin.

And the work doesn't stop. These boys are returning from work at LeTourneau. Where they build giant oil rigs on the river then float them to the gulf. They've been driving in the floodwater for about 6 miles at this point.

That is nuts. I just seen on MSN that LA was bracing for 15' of flood waters.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/43018935/ns/weather/?GT1=43001

BUTTE LAROSE, La. — Cajun country residents threatened by Mississippi River flooding were packing their things Friday as they anxiously awaited word on when federal engineers could open a massive spillway that would inundate hundreds of thousands of rural acres and swamp thousands of homes.

The Army Corps of Engineers is close to opening the key Morganza floodway to relieve pressure on the levees downstream that protect the more densely populated Baton Rouge and New Orleans areas. The corps could make the move as early as this weekend, though officials stress that no final decision has been made.

Still, the governor has warned residents in the spillway's path to assume they'll have to leave their homes. With that threat looming, some 25,000 people in an area known for small farms, fish camps, crawfish and a drawling French dialect are hurriedly packing and worrying that their homes and way of life might soon be drowned.

They just can't catch a break on the gulf coast can they :(

That's +15 feet in those areas.. The river itself is 57 feet deep over her banks..

100 year flood... No matter how the Corps tries, that ol' man river will do what he wants. He creates a new delta every 100 years or so. It is also constantly changing. After this flood there will be new turns in the river. New islands. Where sand bars once were it will be 60 feet deep and the bar will have moved 1/4 mile.......

The delta floods every year like clockwork from seasonal rains and northern snow melt.... All the rain snow here has to go somewhere... The great and little Miami, Mad rivers etc run into the Ohio, it into the MS, and on into the south. The flood of a century. That's why i kind of laugh when people here talk about "flooding"... That's just a mud puddle... All the floods that happen here drain south then join together into a super flood. When the floods here get there, it's a drop in the bucket. But combined they'll fill said bucket.

Here are the historic flood markers on the Levy in Vicksburg. Keep in mind the river is down a hill about 40 feet elevation below the cameraman and behind him. You can see where it floods every year. right below the sign.. That's normal yearly flooding.

To put things in perspective, corps engineer Jerry Smith crunched some numbers and found that the amount of water flowing past Vicksburg, Miss., would fill the Superdome, where the NFL's New Orleans Saints play, in 50 seconds.

In Vicksburg, Miss., Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace said at least five neighborhoods have taken on water.

"We're patrolling subdivisions by boat," Pace said Friday.

Deputies are also living at Eagle Lake, a community north of Vicksburg that was evacuated and is now isolated. And U.S. Highway 61, a major north-south route has been cut off by water, affecting thousands of people, Pace said.

Luckily my parents are on higher ground above the delta. But i have a good bit of family flooded.

This pic from MSNBC is of Brenda. I went to school with many of the Hynums and knew most of their family well. Kind of strange to be way up here and see a pictures on the national news of homes and people i know back home...

Brenda Hynum hugs her daughter Debra Emery as they watch floodwaters rise around Emery's mobile home in Vicksburg, Miss., on May 16. A sand berm around the trailer failed in the night and floodwaters from the rising Mississippi river rushed in. "We tried so hard to stop it. It goes from anger to utter disbelief that this could happen. I just want to go home," Emery said.

The levies are holding thank God... They just aren't tall enough. The problem with a topped levee though is the water coming over will erode the back side and cause it to fail.

Flood waters from the Mississippi River pour over a levee on the Yazoo River, a tributary to the Mississippi River, north of Vicksburg, Miss., May 13. Thousands of residents who live along or near the river from Illinois, Missouri, Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi and Louisiana have been forced to evacuate, and thousands of acres of prime farmland have been covered by the record-setting rising waters. But you know the old saying about when life gives you lemons. Make Lemonade. All the fish from the river systems escape the current of the main channel and move into the flood waters. Mostly to spawn. As a kid we have filled 48 quart Ice chests full of 2lb crappie in a couple hours..

To give you an idea of how tall these levies are. You can see this pic is taken with the camera dang near on the ground. Look how far downhill the guy on the left is... These guys are pinning down a big rubber mat in the event the levee is topped so the back side doesn't erode. If the camera was to pan right on the other side there would be water as far as the eye could see against the levee, and as deep as the bottom of this pic.
