If you were out west in bear, moose, and mountain lion country which would you carry. I can see benefits of both. More capacity vs more power. I seem to change my mind every couple of days on which I would choose.

Carrying capacity means nothing...odds of you getting more then 3 shots off are slim. Shit happens so fast that you really only have one shot that matters. Give me the 44 mag.

Bear and moose will bluff charge. About the time you get to the point of thinking about clicking the safety off, they are within feet. Anyone taking shots farther then that...really had no idea or respect for the animal.

When in the Alaskan bush, I actually carried a .45ACP in a Springfield 1911. Why? Because I knew exactly where my bullet would land. If I have one shot that matters...that is the pistol for me. Otherwise, it was 45/70 or 12 gauge for anything beside hiking or fishing. (45/70 for cold weather conditions when gloves were needed)

Walbridge oh
More important is what bullit to use. No hollow points. Go for hard cast lead. Glock 20 in 10mm stuffed full of hard cast would be a great pistol for the lower 48!

Giles I think you are right about only getting a couple of shots off anyways. However I might also say that if you can't handle a 44 mag a 10mm may be the way to go. It's better than nothing, but 44 mag is probably the better option.

IMHO if someone can't handle the 44 mag just stay home where it's safe. Just my opinion.
