I figured I'd start a thread on my late season muzzy sits. Today was the opener and it runs through 1/10. I made it out tonight and hope to get out the last couple hours of every afternoon through Thursday.
The field I was in tonight is about 3 acres and we planted corn in it this year. Last weekend we went and mowed down some of the corn and put out a couple of those fake round-bale blinds. Those things are the bomb!
The deer really started moving the last 45 minutes or so of legal light. In total I saw about 25 - 30 deer. Several came within 10 to 15 yards of the blind and could have cared less about it. The wind was in my favor of course.
I did have the 'last' biggest core deer come in front of me for most of the evening. He is a mid 160s 10 with a kicker and broken brow. I would have loved to have popped him, but due to the rules the other two guys and I came up with he in not on my hit list since I have already taken one of the big core deer (with my bow). We have these rules in place to basically 'spread the wealth' around for those who can't hunt as much. If he does the same thing tomorrow I am hoping the landowner has a crack at him!
Tomorrow I will be in a bigger food plot (also mowed corn) with a friend from work. He is basically a meat hunter so I am sure we will have some luck. There are also some bucks we have classified as culls that I hope he may get a crack at. For me I am just hoping a big transient deer comes to visit the plots. We have got some pics of some new decent ones it that field which may just trip my trigger! I also have 2 doe tags for this season but may not choose to fill those till after X-mas.

Some pics from tonight from my crappy i-phone.

I live in east central Iowa. Linn county.
And you are right about the self reserve and rules giles. We have gotten more strict on ourselves over the years too. It's never easy to pass on a great deer though.....

It's obviously paying off though, good for you guys. Truly happy for you all.

So tonight ended up being a pretty good one overall.
First of all I chose the wrong spot. I had assumed the deer would all come straight to the mowed corn, but they didn't. Most came out of the north and fed in the beans for most of the evening. This included a nice transient buck I would like to shoot (he is gimpy as my hunting buddy's guest shot him in the upper right leg on Sunday night...), and one of the cull bucks I was hoping the friend who was sitting with me in the bale blind would get a crack at. In the end the gimpy buck stayed pretty much where he was feeding in the beans and kept bedding down. The cull did come to the cut corn, but just as my friend was getting ready to shoot, something spooked most of them and he did not get a shot. A big doe did stick around and he popped her. I also had another friend who had some bow doe tags along. I put him in a tree stand in the middle of the farm. He got a doe too. Spinal tapped her and dropped her in her tracks. He was just off of one of our main food plots on a trail that leads to it.
I plan to go again tomorrow and will be sitting in the center tower of the field where I was tonight. I'm hoping the gimpy buck sticks close. I'll also have another friend along in case one of the culls shows.
And the big 10 I saw yesterday was in this field tonight. Could have killed him again!!
Here are a couple pics from tonight.

'Bring out the gimp'!

Just got back at it. In the center tower tonight.

First pic is looking west. Second pic is NW. The gimp was by the tower in the second pic which is 150 yds. Last pic is south. Was in that bale blind yesterday.

I had a shot at the gimp tonight and blew it. He came out with about 15 minutes left and was just to the left of the north tower on the edge of the beans. Same place as yesterday. It was about 165 yards and I think I did not hold high enough and shot under him. At the shot all he did was pick his head up and look my direction. I almost got a second shot off before he gimped back into the timber.
I only snapped one pic of deer in the field tonight, a doe and her two button fawns. Saw 15 to 20 with most coming out of the south. A few dink bucks and one decent 130'ish 10.

I attached some pictures of 'the gimp'. The color pics are from last year (can tell it is him from the tear in his ear). The black and white pic is from the night after the afternoon he was shot. If you look you can see the bullet hole at the top if his right leg. He looks better in person, an 8 with long G2s and 3s. I'd guess him mid-40s. Hopefully we find out!
