I've been a slug gun guy all along but have been getting the rifle bug lately.... Just not sure if .44 or .444? 45/70 should be what I get as we have the dies already....

Myself also,12-to 20ga,,,last year picked up a very easy to carry, pac 44cva single shot, very accurate,
Just as deadly as any 12ga missle, it like the ruger77/44 has a fast 1-20 twist,,, very accurate

Break open, single shot, one shot wonder, but with a little motor skill practice
U can reload it pretty fast, 1or 2 shots anyway on most hunts, either their down or run off from a miss
Like a muzzleloader one shot so it has to count

The .444 Marlin is very difficult beat if just comparing ballistics of the common calibers and readily available guns and ammo, in fact I don't think you can beat it.

Choice would depend on how and where you hunt. As a 200 yd point and shoot caliber with a bunch of retained energy it certainly comes out on top but you may not need that kind of energy or range where you hunt.

444 Marlin still carries nearly the same velocity at 200 yds that a 44 Mag has at the muzzle and retains 1500 lbs of energy at 200 yards, more that 500 more than the 44 mag at 100 yards, 1,000. bit again is your shots are all 100 and closer you not really need the extra get up and go the .444 delivers.

I bought a savage model 220 slug gun last year. Gun is very accurate with the 20 gauge Remington 2 3/4 accutips. Shot my buck this year at 150 yards and took out top of his heart. Deer never took a step. First deer I killed with it. I may add a straight wall rifle someday just to be able to carry a lever action with open sights.

Farthest shot I've taken deer hunting in 25yrs with anything
Is 78 yards,an that was a cva hunterbolt 45 mag,muzzleloader
444 marlin,,, 45-70 which my son uses is overkill to me,but thorns hammer, nevertheless

Sitting on an 870 12 gauge for 18 years that I've yet to get a deer with...my last two years have been dedicated to doing just that. Once I tag a deer with it, I will be going level action .444 and getting away from my TC .50 pushing the SST. That gun almost doesn't seem fair...it'll group like my .300 win mag under 150 yards. Maybe better with someone that can actually shoot!

Overkill? Not imo. personally I wouldn't hunt with a 44, But we have some long shots at our place. I hunted with a 12 ga, for years until going to the 444 a couple years ago. Love this round. Its a joy to shoot.

J what rounds you pushing through yours? It's really saying something when I live in a high powered rifle state and I still hunt with my 220 all season. That is a revolutionary slug gun imo. Having said that 44mag is still a freaking sweet gun

2 3/4" ACCUTIPS are all I shoot outta mine, trust me I've spent a lot on other rounds to make sure I get the most accurate one... The ACCUTIPS out performed any other round hands down....

Did not try the 3" so I will put that out there, but from talking to 3" shooters they get the same just further out...

Actually if the state would just make the .35 Remington a legal round I'd be golden, then I could use my grandfathers deer rifle....
