Need some help here.

Toshiba laptop computer... I believe it's a Satellite A7200, core i7 processor. It's about 3 years old.

About a week or so ago I noticed the battery was not charging when it was plugged in. No big deal really, since I'm usually close to a power outlet anyway. So we just kept using it as long as it was plugged in and everything was fine. Well, this morning I opened it up and logged on. As the desktop was loading up, I heard a funny beep sound and it just turned off. Black screen. Nothing. Now it won't turn back on at all. I removed the battery and plugged in the adapter, still nothing... won't turn on. What do you guys think? Is it fried or do I just need a new battery? I assumed if I removed the battery it would still turn on but that's not the case... making me believe it's fried.

I would take it somewhere first. I think your idea about the battery could be a good possibility. Might even be the plug itself.

I have seen some models that wouldn't run at all without a battery in them, even if they are plugged into AC power. I would start with the battery, i'm guessing that's your issue. The only other reason that battery wouldn't be charging would be if the AC power adapter is bad. Any green lights on it to verify it is working ok? Sometime where the AC adapter plugs into the back of the laptop will come loose as well.

Check voltage at the power adapter. If good then I would spend the money to replace the battery. Pretty cheap on Ebay usually.

Check both the voltage at the charger plug and pop the battery and check it with a volt meter.

So it's official... I'm a dipshit.

Battery is definitely junk, since it won't take a charge, but the reason my laptop shut off is because it wasn't getting juice from the AC adapter. And not because the adapter is faulty... No, simply because the cord coming from the receptacle was partially unplugged from the adapter!!! Doh!

Thanks for the help everyone. I guess a new battery will be in order next.

Haha. Yep, battery is next. Thankfully they're only about 25-30 bucks. I can live with that!
