Wife's First....

tami's 1st.jpg

Wife took her first deer ever on Saturday at the Ravenna Arsenal. After sticking a 120" 10 last weekend and losing blood after a mile track, she was bummin pretty hard. I tried to convince her that it happens to everyone, but what wife actually listens to their husband?

So we got to Ravenna and did the whole shpeal in the morning and the sent us to our spot, area 4B. The escort told gave us an idea of where to sit, and we headed there for the first half hour of light. Then we decided to take a walk just to get an idea of the lay of the land in our section. Found an old railroad bed that was elevated overlooking a big oak flat in the bottom, so we decided to sit on top cause we could see most of our section from there. Not 15 minutes later, she says, "deer".

It was a small buck, but a buck none the less(she wasn't going to shoot a doe). He was about 100 yds. out, so we put the old commanche creep on him and stalked to about 60 yds. He was totally relaxed eating acorns, so we were in no rush. She cocked the old H&R, put the bead on him, and shot. Mule kick, blood spraying from his front shoulder, and he went down within eyeshot.

She's been hunting hard since last year to finally get her hands on some bone(not mine tho, she doesn't have to hunt TOO hard for that). I was really proud of the shot she was able to put on this deer and keep her cool. Now I can finally focus on hunting instead of guiding...

Congrats she looks very happy which is what counts....Just as a point of reference do you have to be active duty or veteran to hunt the Ravenna Arsenal property. I have been out to West Branch a few times and noticed all their property but was unsure its restrictions.

Also is their gun season early or I guess I am confused being new to Ohio. Sorry to be the thousand questions kind of guy.

Nope, don't have to be active duty. Just have to apply via online or mail for the lottery that the ODNR does for this and all the other controlled hunts(plumbrook, magee, ottawa, etc.). It's $3 per entry, and they usually start taking names in June, with drawings held in August.

Most of the controlled hunts you are allowed to use guns, regardless of the date of your hunt.
