A guy at work gave me this kit. It was his dad's who recently passed away. Does anybody know anything about this kit? The graphics speak 1970s but I'm not sure. Is it safe? I'd at least like to finish it.

It's one of the inexpensive kits offered back then 70-80's. You can tell by the 2 piece stock with the brass plate the goes around it, the reason for the 2 piece stock was to lower the price over a full length stock.
If it hasn't been messed with I wouldn't finish it but sell it on Ebay for top money and buy a current production ML. There is a collector in the crazy world looking for it.
See if it has Navy Arms on the box.

Safe probably but today's ML rifles are 10 times better.

My dad has one of those and a matching pistol... His is a early 80's model. We hunted the crap out of the rifle back in the day. If you do plan to sell it, PM me please. I'd be interested in finishing it and putting it on the wall in my man cave.

I have a Percussion Kentucky Long Rifle ( .45 ) that my grandfather and I built. Killed a Bob Cat in VA., and 2 Doe with it. Have not shot it in years though.

The gun pictured on the box is not the gun in the box. The gun in the box is this one.

That's a pretty cool looking long gun. I'm not sure about anything else about it but it would look pretty awesome hanging on the wall with a piece of old gray barn siding behind it lol.

We hunted with those guns growing up. Honestly, they are a blast to hunt with and can shoot pretty darn accurate. They key is to take care of the powder and make sure you avoid major temp changes so the powder doesn't draw moisture in between firings. Mike, I have nearly the same gun. My Dad left it to me. His is stamped Jukar Spain. They were imported by companies like CVA, Richland, etc.. during the 1970's and 1980's. My dad added quite a bit of brass bling to his and its finished in a dark mahogany color. I have seen several other peoples and most of them added some personal touches to them. With the box and all somebody might pay you a couple hundred bucks I would guess. I know Dad shot several nice bucks and dozens of Does with his. The largest buck my brother has, maybe a 155" 11pt, was taken with it. I've shot several Does with it and plan on using it this black powder season. We always shot round balls through them but they shoot modern sabots very good too. Mine says it has a 1 in 28 twist, which is the riflings I believe. Have fun and make it a piece of art. Dad did with his and bought my brother a youth model that he personalized. As gifted and creative as you are I think you could do something unique

Thompson Center sold hawken kits around 1979 when Ohio adopted the muzzleloader hunts and early muzzleloader at Salt fork and Wildcat Hollow. The difficulty was "browning" the barrel steel. Navy Arms in NJ sold a variety of kits. Also a well known muzzleloader catalog down in Tennesse? will have to dig out the old catalog to get the name. just remembered it. Dixie Gun Works.

Dixie Gun works is still in business and selling kits for rifles and pistols.

Yeah, this barrel is not blued. Was it common for the parts to almost fit? I guess you need to do some work to get it together? There are no assembly instructions either. I can't find any schematics on it, not even at Numerichs and they were said to sell this model back in the day. I'm not going to sell it. I worked with the owner of the gun and I'd like to see it through it's completion. I'll do it in his honor.

The barrel is soaking in Rustoleum Rust Resolver. It's the same as Evaporust. It's working nicely. I'll blue the barrel this weekend.uploadfromtaptalk1440718756484.jpguploadfromtaptalk1440718784702.jpg

Most did not have browning or bluing. The kit was purchased separately depending. I browned mine. You could do Hot or Cold bluing.

*** "Back in the day"... when a man bargained for a new gun, they usually came in 3 peace's. That's why today when you want the whole thing you say you want "Lock, stock and barrel"
Bear fat was rubbed on the shiny barrel and warmed in the fire to dull the color.
