I'm just really confused at what I'm looking at.....

DDoS stands for Distributed Denial of Service. Basically someone writes virus code that infects computers. Or they hack servers and install the code. At a predetermined time all of the machines start sending traffic to a specific website, mail server, or regular server. This flood of traffic overwhelms the server. Basically they send so much garbage traffic the server can't filter out and service the legitimate traffic resulting in a denial of service to legitimate users. Firewalls and security system have become sophisticated enough now to filter out the traffic based of the traffic fingerprint. Another defense is to have the security device redirect the legitimate traffic to a standby server while letting the garbage traffic bang away at the old one. The attack usually doesn't last long because as soon as it's activated the person who owns the sending machine finds out it's infected and either turns it off or cleans it.
