Family Vacation Ideas

Now that Kody is a freshman, his football schedule has gotten a lot more involved. Between his baseball and football schedule... Klay's baseball and 8th grade football schedule, Katie's baseball and cheering schedule... Dear Lord! It's hard to schedule a vacation all of a sudden. Anyway, we have a small window the last week of June to try and squeeze something in. I'm looking for ideas for a cool little getaway. Maybe a 4 day thing or something.

My wife is talking beach, but that's every friggin year! I like the idea of following the Pirates around and catching them at other stadiums, but they're home most of that week with exception of playing at Detroit in interleague play. It crossed my mind to catch a game in Detroit and see what's cool to do with a short drive (2-3 hours) from Detroit.

However, I'm open to any ideas.

you guys have anything cool you did with the families that you recommend? I love to drive, so hitting the road for 8-10 hours doesn't bother me in the slightest.

Have you looked into what fish will be on the east coast around that time of year. I'd like to go south someday and catch the Tarpon migration also. Those are my two family vacations that I'm looking forward too someday.

Good suggestions so far! I'd leave the game in Detroit and go straight north on 75! Northern MI is one of my favorite places in all of the lower 48. If a hillbilly like you cannot find a fish to catch, elk to view, and a nice beach for your bride to enjoy... you must not be half the hillbilly I think you are! I've got faith in you, and think when you get there, you will LOVE it!

Start here. I've not been there, but my neighbor has and loved it. We usually go to a lake close to tip...yeah, I said that. :) I spent a good deal of time crawling around in the National forest up there in my youth, fished a lot of streams and lakes, and took note of the huge tourist business the area supports. That, and timber, are what keeps their economy going. With you being a history lover, Macinac may interest you. Heck, the bridge (The Big Mac), over to the UP is an amazing thing to see too, but all that is farther up than what I posted for you. The dunes would be a good area for a short trip as I am certain you can rent ATVs for the family to ride up there. If you wanted to take your own, there are 1000s of miles of sandy trails to ride all over N. MI, which might interest you at a later time. The beaches up there on both Lake Mi and Huron are pretty darn nice...the water is a little clearer than what you'll find flowing down the mighty Ohio too.... :) Maybe even take the kids out on a Walleye or Salmon charter for a day. The possibilities are endless, seriously! Google MI trips and you'll see what I mean!

KR loves the Henry Ford Museum too. It's just outside of Detroit. I've not been there either, as I can't fish there, but she thinks it's the coolest place ever. I prefer being east of downtown Detroit, on Lake St Clair. I've only been there once, but the next time KR wants to go to the HFM, I will be on the lake while she walks through history. :)

If you end up in Detroit for a game, the downtown has some areas which are being cleaned up and attracting tourists again. When there for the Garth concert, one of Erin's friends met up with us. She and her husband were locals. They showed us some downtown shops and the eating was phenomenal. Just saying, it changed my opinion of Detroit (a little bit). The food was terrific anyway.

Henry Ford museum is pretty cool. There is another place I cannot remember the name at the moment. Sauder Village maybe?

We used to camp at Otsego Lake state park up there. Very beautiful, gin clear lake that is loaded with good fishing. The Pigeon River Forrest up there has some little trout streams that meander through it that you can hop off the road and fish. Used to catch tons of Brookies in the black River along Tin Shanty Rd. Almost forgot: if you get into The Northern Lower and see Chopped Beef for sale, do yourself a favor and buy a pound of it and spread it over some crackers. It is seriously the best cured/raw meat snack I've ever eaten
