Toxins from the algae bloom in the western basin got into the water supply. All communities that use Toledo water are screwed until further notice. Boiling makes the toxins more toxic.

How does something like this happen?
I have no clue. They blame an antiquated system but we get algae blooms every year. Now they are sending samples all over because they don't understand the data. This could all be for nothing but a false positive. This shows how vulnerable people who aren't prepared really are.

Expand. They've been blaming farm runoff for the recent blooms. I'm pretty ignorant about it.
Pretty much it is what it is. There is a 100 year supply of in ground phosphorus right now and all they do is keep piling it on year after year. Everybody is scared to piss off the farmers so they dance around the issue like pussies. It's that ugly pink elephant in the room. You, the users, are going to pay dearly for the fix I promise.

Removal of the feed system.

Removal of the phosphorus laden sediment from the west basin

Control of bottom feeding fish to limit disturbance

Probably new treatment technology or a change in how the plant gets its water..

And pound the governors phone lines and push every button imaginable to make them force the farmers to clean up their act.

What a mad scramble today...I would hate to see what people in my area turn into IF we have REAL emergency.

Most Farmers don't use city water do they? Hmmm.

Yes some of it is the farmers
But yard run off , your nice green lawns
Also waste treatment plants , dumping raw sewage when there is a lot of rain

My dad and my brother are both farmers
They have had it pounded into them about run off

So they have to watch the fields

But many home owners and some lawn services put on way to much fertilizer
So it ends up running off
Where dose the run off end up ? Lake Erie

And I bet a large percent of the excess food for the algae comes from up stream

while those are contributors, they are a very, very small percentage of the actual load. Most runoff from homes are captured in ponds where is settles out before making it to the river.

We couldn't find any water in waterville or whitehouse, ended up using a water shed in grand rapids...there are 7 in our area...lucked out and knew somebody in tiffin that got 10gals and 10cases for us...

Heating some bottled water now to clean the kids sippy cups...not sure if i'm going to shower today or not.

Does anyone know where the city of oregon gets their water from? How were they able to avoid this?
